It's currently peak fall migration season for millions of birds across the U.S.🐦‍⬛! So we shared 4 super easy ways to help make their journey a little easier!

1. 🌃 Turn off the lights at night. Artificial light can disorient migrating birds, so turning off unnecessary lights helps them navigate safely.

2.🪟 Make windows visible. Apply window decals, screens, or other methods to help birds see the glass and avoid collisions.

3.🚰 Provide clean water. A clean birdbath or other water source gives birds a place to hydrate and bathe as they travel.

4.🐈 Keep cats indoors. Indoor cats help protect birds from pet predation, especially during migration.

Small actions can make a big difference for birds on the move! Together, we can make Montana a safer place for birds passing through this fall! 🍁

🦬 Montana’s first Audubon-certified bird-friendly bison ranch is making headlines!

North Bridger Bison was recently featured in a Wall Street Journal op-ed by Tate Watkins exploring the important role private ranches have played in American bison conservation. 🪶

Founded in 2018 by Matt and Sarah Skoglund and their two children, North Bridger Bison is a family-run ranch in Montana’s Shields Valley. The ranch produces regeneratively raised, humanely field-harvested bison meat while managing its lands to support a diversity of native wildlife, including Greater Sage-Grouse, songbirds, sandhill cranes, pronghorn, mule deer, and wolves.🐦‍⬛

In 2023, North Bridger Bison became the first bison ranch in Montana to earn Audubon Bird-Friendly Land certification through Audubon Conservation Ranching. This certification recognizes land management practices that support healthy grasslands and provide essential habitat for birds and other wildlife.🌱

It's National month! 🍂🦉

That crunchy leaf layer isn't a mess, it's a bird buffet and critical habitat for many native pollinators! 🐛

Fallen leaves provide food, shelter, and protection for all kinds of wildlife, from insects and other tiny critters to the birds that forage for them. They also help protect overwintering pollinators and return valuable nutrients to the soil.🌱

So this fall, skip the rake and let your yard get a little wild! A little leaf litter can make a big difference for the birds, pollinators, and other wildlife that call your yard home. 🐦‍⬛💙

Montana Audubon has a long history of supporting the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), a critical program that protects Montana’s landscapes for birds, wildlife, and the communities who love them. 🐦🏞️

From public lands and wildlife habitat to parks, fishing access, and outdoor recreation, LWCF investments help safeguard Montana’s natural heritage while supporting local communities and our outdoor recreation economy. Despite LWCF’s proven success, the program faces new threats and challenges.🦉

Read their new report to learn what’s at risk and why protecting LWCF means protecting Montana’s lands, waters, wildlife, and communities for generations to come 🦅: mtaudubon.org/conservation-policy/federal-policy/lwcf/

📣The Montana State Wildlife Action Plan, approved by the USFWS this year, relies on intact forests to conserve numerous Species of Concern like the American Goshawk, Great Gray Owl, Black-backed Woodpecker, and Flammulated Owl. Rescinding the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule puts them at risk.

💬 The good news? There’s more time to speak up! The public comment deadline has been extended to October 6.

🌾The grasslands of Montana, and the entire Northern Great Plains region of North America, are dotted with countless often-temporary wetlands. Collectively, these glacial depressions form one of North America’s most productive wildlife landscapes—the Prairie Pothole Region.

🦆Often called the continent’s “duck factory,” this is the breeding, nesting, and hatching habitat for over 60% of ducks in North America, as well as dozens of other species of migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds.

🪿Now, however, an obscure federal review by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has placed the future of many thousands of those tiny wetland habitats in doubt.

📣Larry Berrin, Executive Director of Montana Audubon, says, “if you understand the importance of conservation, the importance of waterfowl habitat, wildlife habitat, and clean water then you know the value of these habitats. Please take advantage of this opportunity and make your voices heard.”
