The LCHS is a private, community-based, not-for-profit organization that provides shelter for unwanted and stray animals (primarily dogs and cats) while working to end pet overpopulation, reduce the need for euthanasia, and improve the humane treatment and well-being of companion animals. It serves a population of roughly 70,000 residents in southwestern Montana and a service area covering roughly 5,500 square miles. Since its creation in 1964, LCHS has continued to grow and expand its facilities and programs along with the growth of the community. In an effort to decrease the amount of animals that come through the shelter, we work tirelessly to make sure the pets in our community are vaccinated and spayed and neutered while in our care. LCHS also has a comprehensive foster care program - including day-trips and sleepovers - in order to help meet the needs of all the animals in our care while they wait for their forever homes. We also have multiple specialized personnel who work to socialize, exercise, and train animals in our care, in order to provide the best quality of life for the animals. Except this Ken IS a ten. And his job? MOUNTAIN. 🏔️💙

Meet Ken, our handsome, rugged, outdoorsy husky boy who's ready to discover that life can be more than just looking majestic against a mountain backdrop.

Like any good northern breed, Ken has that independent spirit, but underneath all that fluff is a sweet boy who's just looking for his people.

Ken hasn't had much experience being an indoor family dog, so he's hoping to find someone patient who can show him the ropes. He can be a little cautious with new people, but give him some time to warm up and you'll start to see the wonderful guy underneath. He's also lived successfully with other dogs!

Ken doesn't need a Mojo Dojo Casa House (although he wouldn't complain). He just needs a family willing to help him learn what being a beloved house dog is all about.

💔 Bean is back at the shelter. And our hearts are breaking for this sweet old girl.

Some of you may remember Bean's story. After spending 13 wonderful years with her beloved mom, circumstances beyond their control forced her family to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender her. It wasn't a lack of love. In fact, it was quite the opposite.

Now, at 14 going on 15, Bean finds herself back at LCHS, waiting once again for someone to give her a place to call home.

And we're asking our community to look past her age and see the incredible dog she is.

Bean is the sweetest little house hippo you could ever hope to meet. She's gentle, affectionate, and absolutely ADORES children. She loves a good snuggle, and still has a little puppy spirit in her—just in shorter bursts these days! Her ideal retirement involves short walks, sunny spots to nap, tasty snacks, and a family to love.

We know Bean is old. But we also know that old dogs still have so much love left to give.

Bean has spent nearly her entire life being someone's best friend. She knows what it means to be part of a family, and we desperately want her to experience that again.

She doesn't need grand adventures or a busy lifestyle. She just needs a cozy place to rest her head, some loving arms to curl up in, and someone who will love her for however much time she has left.

💔 Breeze is our longest-term dog and quite frankly, we cannot figure out WHY.

This 3 year-old girl is an absolute ROCKSTAR. And we're not the only ones who think so! Every volunteer who has taken her on a day trip and every family who has fostered her has come back with glowing reviews. She's well-behaved, affectionate, playful, and just an all-around wonderful dog.

Breeze came to us after her owner sadly passed away, and she's been waiting far too long for someone to give her a second chance.

This girl LOVES her people. She greets her favorite humans with enthusiastic play bows, happily tags along for car rides and walks, loves to carry around her favorite toys, and will follow you from room to room just to be close. But don't let her playful side fool you—she's equally happy spending the afternoon napping or snuggled up on the couch. She's the perfect mix of adventure buddy and couch potato!

Breeze can be selective about her dog friends, so thoughtful introductions are important. But when it comes to people? She's got SO much love to give.

We genuinely believe Breeze is going to make someone an incredible companion. She just needs that someone to finally come meet her.

🎉🎂 A VERY SPECIAL STAFF PICK OF THE WEEK! 🎂🎉

Today is Chase's birthday, and she has just ONE birthday wish… for her favorite girl, Breeze, to finally find her forever home!

If you ask Chase why she loves Breeze so much, she'll tell you it's simple: She's snuggly, she's sweet, and her wiggly little butt never fails to put a smile on her face!

Breeze came to us after her owner sadly passed away. We don't know much about the life she lived before arriving here, but we do know that she's been through a lot of change. And through it all, she's doing her very best to keep her head up, keep that butt wiggling, and keep loving everyone she meets.

Breeze is a smart girl who knows what she likes, especially when it comes to her dog friends! She can be a little selective (a girl is allowed to have standards 💅), and she tends to prefer the boys.

Breeze is now our longest-term dog, and while we love getting to see her sweet face every day, we would love nothing more than to see her wiggling her way into a home of her very own.

So this year, Chase isn't asking for presents, cake, or balloons. She's asking for something so much better: a happy ending for her favorite girl.

Our most anticipated and beloved event is back! Join us on Saturday, March 13, 2027, at the Helena Civic Center for our Annual Spayghetti Dinner, LCHS’s biggest fundraiser of the year!

This year’s theme is Alter the Odds—a celebration of the many ways compassionate care and spay and neuter can change the course of an animal’s life. Every act of support helps give animals a better chance at a safe, healthy future.

Check out our Behavior Manager, Skyler and Animal Care Specialist, Kaylee at the Canis Conference all the way in Illinois! They are hard at work learning all the latest research and new skills to bring back to LCHS!
