SEMI FINAL PICKS!!!!!!

This is Doug with Montana AA Prep Football. We say goodbye to 4 more teams and we are down to the final 4. As usual the season flew bye. Only two teams can advance to the State Title game so after Friday night the season will be over for two more teams. The games last week went pretty much as I expected except for the one upset. We have both semifinal games being rematches so this should be fun. Of the 4 remaining teams only one was in the semis last year with the defending State champion Spartans keeping their 3-peat hopes alive and making the return to the final four. It looks like weather could be a factor in both games, temperature will be for sure so I will take a look into the Max Prep Stats to see which teams might be at an advantage. I am going to take emotion out of these picks. I went 3-1 on my picks last week and that moves me to 66-14 on the season. I want to thank all of the fans for participating. There are still 5 in contention mathematically to win. Matthew Cooper went 4-0 and surged into a third place tie with Paul Bisom at 67-13.
Friday nights are a magical time under the lights with memories for these young people that will last a life time. It is not only the games. It is the bus rides with friends, the locker room. Two a days. The Weight room in the summer. All of the little things that no one else see’s. Soon we will be having football banquets and then moving on to the winter sports but fall is my favorite.

Now we do say goodbye to Butte, West, Glacier and Helena High. It is no small feat to make it to the elite 8 so congratulations are in order. West might have had a down year for that program but still were a great team. Glacier looked to be able to compete against any team before falling on the road. Helena high had a great season under a new head coach and Butte was able to play with the number one team in the State for 3 quarters.

ONTO FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!!!

Let’s do this!!!

We will kick things off in the Bozone for a repeat of the week 8 crosstown matchup where Bozeman High (8-2) hosts upset minded Gallatin (9-2). When we look at the score of that week 8 game the Hawks prevailed 38-14. I would expect this game to be closer. Let’s look at some team stats that matter in cold weather.
Of the 4 teams remaining the Hawks rank 3rd defensively allowing 155 points scored for an average of 15.5 per game. Not bad. The Raptors rank 2nd allowing 153 points on the season at an average of 13.9 per game.

Advantage Raptors.

Offensively it looks like this, The Hawks have rushed for a total of 1423 yards on the season for an average of 142.3 per game. They are led by Brady Casagranda who has rushed for 534 yards with an average of 53.4 per game and Connor Nye who has rushed for 342 yards for an average of 42.8 per game.
The Raptors as a team rushed for 1330 yards on the season for an average of 120.9 per game. They are led by Bryce Mikkelson at 702 yards for an average of 70.2 per game and Wesley Donaghey who rushed for 323 yards averaging 29.4 yards per game.

Advantage Hawks.

Passing the Hawks put up 2511 yards for an average of 251.1 yards per game they are led by Jake Casagranda at 2463 yards per game for an average of 246.3 yards per game in 266 attempts on the season. The Raptors put up 2624 yards per game for an average of 238.5 yards per game, they were led by Garrett Dahlke at 2631 yards for an average of 239.2 yards per game in 313 total attempts on the season.

Advantage Raptors.

Receiving as a team the Hawks racked up 2506 yards on the season led by Rocco Lencioni at 852 Yards for an average of 85.2 and Luke Smith at 778 for an average of 77.8.
The Raptors put up 2624 yards on the season averaging 238.5 per game. They are led by Evan Cherry at 939 yards for an average of 85.4 per game and Quinn Clark at 918 yards for an average of 83.5 per game.

Advantage Raptors.

Now with the weather and field conditions not being the best it favors a good running game so the Hawks have a slight advantage there. Experience also matters and that edge would go to the Hawks and coach Wesche. No one should be counting out the Raptors who are the new kids on the block and writing history as they march through the playoffs. They have recorded the school’s first two playoff wins and first semifinal appearance. As I said late last Friday night, a crosstown semifinal game is a big deal. The Raptors know how to keep games close but to me this game screams Hawks. I said last week that the Raptors have been flying under tha radar all year long but I don’t see them taking the Hawks by surprise.

HAWKS FLY! 32-25

Now we head to The Heart of the Rockies where undefeated Capital (10-0) hosts defending champion Missoula Sentinel (9-2) in a rematch from week 8 where Capital prevailed 40-6. The Spartans hopes for a third straight title are still alive as they march into the Capital City with their swagger and Spartan Nation with them. To make their third final in three years they will have to take down the top team in the State. Should we throw out that week 8 matchup? For this game it doesn’t really matter. The Spartans are not down 34 points to start this game and they have loads of playoff experience where the Bruins have very little. When you think Spartans football you think offense and one would think that the Spartans have the advantage there. Vigilante should be cold and not ideal conditions so let’s go over the same stats we did for the other semifinal game.

Of the 4 semifinalists Sentinel ranks 4th defensively allowing 213 points scored for an average of 19.36 per game. The hometown Bruins rank 1st allowing only 111 points scored for an average of 11.1 per game. Almost half of what the Spartans allowed. Not bad.

Advantage Bruins.

Now let’s look at those key offensive stats. The Spartans have rushed for a whopping 1896 yards per game for an average of 172.4 yards per game. That is more than either the Hawks or Raptors. The Spartans are led by Adam Jones at 975 yards for an average of 97.5 yards per game and Kellen Curtiss at 680 yards for an average of 68 yards per game. The Bruins however as a team have rushed for 2528 for an average of 252.8 yards per game. They are led by Tom Carter at 1034 yards for an average of 103.4 yards per game and Dylan Graham at 691 yards for an average of 76.8 yards per game.

Advantage Bruins.

Surely the Spartans have the advantage through the air with their one quarterback system. Passing the Spartans with Riley Allen have put up 1776 yards for an average of 177.6 yards per game on 218 attempts for the season. The Bruins two headed attack put up 1898 yards for an average of 210.3 yards per game on only 179 attempts on the season. Joey Michelotti led them with 1420 yards for an average of 142 yards per game with 130 attempts on the season followed by Hudson Grovom at 478 yards for an average of 68.3 yards per game on only 46 attempts.

Advantage Bruins.

Receiving as a team the Spartans racked up 1572 yards on the season for an average of 142 yards per game. They are led by Karsen Beitz at 478 Yards for an average of 47.8 yards per game and Adam Jones at 471 yards for an average of 47.1 yards per game. The Bruins totaled 1950 yards for an average of 195 yards per game. They are led by Nick Michelotti at 576 yards for an average of 64 per game and Hayden Opitz at 419 for an average of 41.9 yards per game.

Advantage Bruins.

On paper the Bruins are the superior team and that is exactly what the Spartans want. They want to be overlooked. Both teams are well coached and have great players on both sides of the ball. The game conditions should favor the Bruins but can the Spartans experience and tenacity payoff big in an upset bid on the road? If the Bruins get up early this will be over fast. If the Spartans start fast and put the Bruins down it could very well be that big upset unless the Bruins adjust.

BRUINS MAUL EM! 35-17

Now before anyone goes complaining, again, these stats are right off Max Preps.

Okay here are the fan picks.

In first place at 69-11 is Ben Diveley (2-2 last week), His semifinal picks are Bozeman and Capital.

In Second at 68-12 is Sam Moore (3-1 last week). His Semifinal picks are Bozeman and Capital.

Tied for Third at 67-13 are Paul Bisom (he went 2-2 last week) and Matthew Cooper (4-0 last week). Bisom picks Bozeman and Capital and Cooper picks Gallatin and Capital. The Lone Gallatin pick.

In Fourth at 66-14 is Cherie Curry (2-2 last week). Her semifinal picks are Bozeman and Capital.

So if Gallatin can upset Bozeman then we have a little chaos in the pick’em challenge.

Good luck to all the teams and enjoy the games!

WHAT ARE YOUR PICKS???
