Have you noticed our 2026 Local Food Guide theme?

This year’s theme is Seeding Change.

Seeding change is about solving needs, filling gaps, and closing circles.
It’s about trying something new, learning as you go, and making things better over time. When we plant seeds, whether in soil or in our communities, we’re growing something. Food, yes, and also ideas, businesses, relationships, and resilience.

Sometimes, seeding change looks like starting a farm or launching a new product. Sometimes it’s sharing knowledge, offering support, or simply encouraging someone to try something new. These are all seeds, and with the right care, they grow.

The people behind the 1,200+ food and farm businesses in this Guide are seeding change every day. So are the many hands who helped bring this Guide to life. And you, our reader, are part of it too. By exploring these pages, supporting Montana food businesses, and trying Montana-grown ingredients at home, you are helping grow a stronger food system. Thank you for being part of it.

Our featured Grow & Tell story highlights seed savers preserving cultural knowledge and resilience. Several of our recipes include seed ingredients. We created a Seed Saving Guide so you can save seeds yourself, as well as a game to test your knowledge of seeds.

You can find all of them in the 2026 Local Food Guide, abundantmontana.com/localfoodguide.

The final installment in our "Duality of Raising Animals" blog series, featuring Stick Leg Ranch!

In this three-part series, we ask how producers can devote so much time and care to raising their animals, only to ultimately facilitate the end of their lives.

These stories help us understand this tension, bridge the gap between the field and the table, and offer a fuller picture of the food system. They reveal why the way animals are raised and processed matters, and why choosing your food (and who raises it) with intention makes all the difference.

This month, we share the story of Stick Leg Ranch, who offer pork and beef raised on rotationally grazed, regenerative pasture.

TLDR: Plan Ahead & Be Respectful! 😎

Whether you’re a seasoned farmers market veteran or just learning the ropes, here are some helpful tips and etiquette to increase your success during this farmers market season.

Bring Your Own Bag: Farmers markets don’t usually provide baskets or carts. Bring your own reusable bag, basket, cart, or other container so you're ready to carry the abundance of goodies you're sure to find.

Bring Cash: While some producers accept card or Venmo, many still accept cash only, and sometimes even prefer it. Make sure you come prepared with cash for your purchases. If you use SNAP, also check ahead to see if your market accepts SNAP benefits (you can do this by referencing our farmers market guide!)

Check the Rules: Some farmers markets have specific rules or considerations (like bathroom availability, or no pets). Visit the market’s website or social media ahead of time to make sure you have any important information.

Come Early, but Not TOO Early: Getting that prized quart of berries can be competitive. Get there early in the market to skip lines and increase your chances of success! However, getting there before the market opens isn’t appreciated. Some vendors need to concentrate on getting it all set up and ready for you.

Look, and Sometimes Touch: Be careful about touching or sorting through products, especially if you don’t intend to buy them. If you’re unsure whether touching is invited, it’s best to ask!

Ask Questions: Vendors love their regular customers and meeting new ones. A conversation can go a long way towards getting to know your farmer and making them feel appreciated. Many producers are passionate about their business and are eager to share. If you do start a conversation, try not to block the stand, and be aware of other customers who may need the vendor’s attention, so you don’t delay a potential sale.

Don’t Haggle: Farmers and Ranchers put in an endless amount of hours producing their food, and often it’s already priced as low as it can be. If you don't like the price, just smile, nod, and move on. Nothing brings a bigger smile to a vendor than a customer saying, “Keep the change,” or you throwing in an extra dollar or two.

Which one of these tips hits home with you?
