Today, I’m talking with a couple who made a remarkably quick transition from a conventional life in Missouri to living and traveling full-time in a converted school bus.

Susan Savage worked 29 years as a social worker, while Tad Mayfield worked primarily in the printing industry. Susan had already retired, but Tad was still working long hours to maintain their lifestyle when they realized they wanted something different.

The inspiration came while they were driving down a highway in Missouri and spotted a woman happily cruising along in a converted school bus. Susan told Tad she could live with him in a skoolie, and he agreed.

They went home, crunched the numbers, and called a realtor the next day. Within 31 days, their house, cars and most of their possessions were gone. They didn’t even own a school bus yet.

After finding a partially converted bus in Tennessee, they spent a couple of months getting it ready and hit the road. About six months later, while camping in Iowa, they were approached about becoming camp hosts.

They didn’t even know what camp hosting was at the time. But they gave it a try, enjoyed the experience, and discovered there was an entire world of Workamping opportunities available to them.

If you are doing ANY kind of work while living in an RV - you are Workamping!

We defined and trademarked the term "Workamper/Workamping" back in 1987. Since then, others have tried to attach limited definitions like "working in a campground" or "only if an RV site is provided".

While many Workamping opportunities are in campgrounds- and often an RV site is included as part or all of the compensation - Workamping can be anything you want it to be!

Open your mind to more possibilities. Explore the country while trying new positions and meeting new people.

At Workamper.com, we not only connect you with the widest variety and largest quantity of opportunities, but provide the instructions on how to the find the 'right' ones for you.

Job listings are FREE!
Advanced resources and tools have a minimal membership fee.

This week, I will be talking with a couple who have been Workamping for several years while enjoying some rather unusual adventures. They are gold miners and rockhounds, off-grid specialists and experienced Workampers who have traveled throughout much of the United States, as well as Canada and Alaska.

Rebel and Wendy Miner are currently working at a KM Resorts property in Washington, where Wendy handles many office and guest-service responsibilities, and Rebel puts his extensive maintenance skills to work.

Together, they have developed the kind of reputation that allows them to be selective about the jobs they accept.

During our conversation, you’ll discover why they believe Workampers should focus on providing real value to their employers and how reference letters helped them reach the point where companies now approach them with job opportunities.

We’ll also talk about the importance of developing useful skills before hitting the road, why reducing debt can make the Workamping lifestyle much easier, and how Rebel and Wendy balance earning money with their real passion for traveling and exploring.

The couple offers plenty of practical advice for new and experienced Workampers in videos they produce through their platform Just Go Wilder.

If you enjoy fixing things, working with your hands and solving problems, and you want to travel and live in your RV, finding a Workamping position in “maintenance” might be the key to unlocking your Workamping lifestyle.

Maintenance jobs are among the most common Workamping opportunities because nearly every campground, RV park, resort and public recreation area needs dependable people to keep facilities safe, functional and welcoming throughout the season.

While some maintenance roles require specific experience, many employers simply want reliable workers with practical skills, a willingness to learn and a positive attitude.

If you have ever repaired things around your home, maintained a rental property or tackled do-it-yourself projects, you likely already possess many of the abilities employers value most for these types of positions.
