Save Greers Ferry Lake

Save Greers Ferry Lake Save Greers Ferry Lake, Inc. In 2000 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposed a Shoreline Management Plan.

Save Greers Ferry Lake, Inc., was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in April of 2000 to preserve the natural shoreline and clean water of Greers Ferry Lake. Increased recreational and drinking water demands on this extraordinary resource have created a need for public action to support the future protection of the lake. A group of concerned citizens banned together and formed Save

Greers Ferry Lake, Inc. SGFL joined with the Arkansas Nature Alliance and successfully petitioned the Corps to request a reexamination of the Plan and reduce the number of new docks that would be allowed. In 2004 the Arkansas Wildlife Federation awarded its prestigious "Water Conservationist of the Year" award to SGFL, Inc. The award, which honors groups and individuals who have made significant contributions to promoting the conservation of Arkansas' natural resources, was given for SGFL's efforts to protect the lake. SGFL volunteers continue to monitor activities that might adversely impact the Greers Ferry Lake. We welcome input from the public, including any concerns about the future welfare of this increasingly important source of flood control, power, clean drinking water and recreation.

The Most Unexpected Mountain Hiking on an Island in Arkansas

if you’re looking for mountain hiking that’s a bit off the well-beaten path, Arkansas has a surprise—a mountain on an island—Sugar Loaf Mountain Island. It offers the only hiking trails on an island in the entire state.

Sugar Loaf Mountain Island Trail is a unique and adventurous hiking trail in the middle of Greers Ferry Lake. Greers Ferry Lake is home to the Fairfield Bay Marina where those who want to visit Sugar Loaf can hop aboard the Sugar Loaf Shuttle, a ferry that will take you to the island. It's the only shuttle in the world to the only island trail in Arkansas!

The ferry leaves from the Fairfield Bay Marina four times a day. You can catch it at: 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, and 4:00pm. The cost to ride the Fairfield Bay Marina Shuttle runs a little over $10 per person with a discount for kids ages 4-12.

The marina always recommends that you make a reservation before planning your hike. Call 501-884-6030 for times and reservations. If you’’d rather get there yourself, you can also get to the island by canoe. It’s only a little over a one-mile paddle trek to the island.

The island’s mountain juts about a thousand feet into the sky and the views are some of the most amazing in the entire region. The Sugar Loaf Mountain Island Trail is a 2.5 mile loop that can be surprisingly challenging. There are a lot of steps and steep climbs so be aware.

On the island, a posted sign shows a map view of two trail options leading to the top of Sugar Loaf. One is a short, 1.5-mile roundtrip while the other is about a mile longer roundtrip but offers even more spectacular views. On the south end of the island, you can also climb a “trail” of wood stairs to an overlook at a height of around 500 feet overlooking Greers Ferry Lake.

The trails are among the first in the country to be designated National Scenic Trails. If you keep a steady pace, the hike should take 1 hour up and 1 hour down. This means that you won’t have a lot of time to rest on top of the mountain before the shuttle arrives to pick you up again.

Since you’ll have your phone—you might not have service—you’ll have your camera, and this is the perfect spot to capture images that will set your Instagram on fire. Most people snap a few pictures and begin the trek back down to the dock.

The views are incredible and quite unexpected for such a neat spot in Arkansas! As a hiking destination, not only is this spot is unexpected—it’s unforgettable.
