Meet Gloria — one of our outstanding leaders.
She participated in our leadership training program last year and has since brought her strength, wisdom, and compassion to the women she now leads. We’re incredibly grateful to have her guiding our community. Below is a short bio highlighting her background and the experience she brings to the table.
"Gloria A. Downey is a medically retired Major of the U.S. Air Force JAG Corps. She left her career as a Public Defender in response to the 9/11 terror attacks and spent nearly 7 years focused on combating the military sexual trauma epidemic from 2002 to 2009. During the surge of 2007 she was deployed to Baghdad and served in Task Force 134 where she prosecuted terrorists in the Central Criminal Court of Iraq. With no formal combat training, Gloria completed 80+ on foot missions into the Red Zone under guard. During this most deadly period of the Iraq war, Gloria was injured leading to her medical retirement in 2009. For her exceptional service she was promoted to Major upon retirement. Unfortunately, Gloria was met with apathy and neglect by both the Air Force and VA healthcare services and was not able to begin recovery for over a decade. Gloria finally found a great VA in 2017 and began receiving desperately needed health care. Gloria credits the numerous non-profits who provide support to wounded warriors for helping to save her life by guiding her to supplemental healing, primarily through recreation, art and holistic therapies. Gloria retrained and now makes films about the veteran experience with a focus on the stories of women veterans. Gloria has found her new mission and purpose in helping other veterans find healing, serving as a mentor for several veteran nonprofits, and is a proud member of the White Heart family."
