Last year was the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and was designated the National Day of Service. In designating this day as a National Day of Service, the hope was and is for each community to come together through service. Many communities and individuals across the nation responded by honoring those who served so valiantly by following their examples of service and unification in that service. Wasatch county had a remarkable day of service.

2021's September 11th Day of Service got underway with over 200 citizens, individual groups and their families involved in donating service in many ways. In addition to the organized service activities, many local citizens and their families helped neighbors in various home and yard projects.

And the result? Bonding and connecting within families, groups and the community while serving for common causes. People enjoying working together and left feeling satisfied. Understanding the importance of the service organizations within the community and their needs. And the service rendered was so valuable for others like the helping of a cancer victim's family, or the work at the Children's Justice Center or cleanup at a cemetery, around town and state parks or the ongoing service of the pantry in town.

This year's theme is COUNTRY, COUNTY, COMMUNITY in honoring our local First Responders and providing service together in our community. As we remember our own Wasatch heroes as well as those across the nation, it is the hope of the organizers that more citizens will gain a vision of unity and goodness that is part of being an American! On September 11th, 2001 when the horrific events created by evil men unfolded, people in America and the world came to one another's aid in so many ways. Differences were put aside and help was rendered by First Responders and many others. We were Americans and friends of Americans that responded with compassion, service and many with their very lives.

As we remember those who sacrificed on 9/11, let us remember our own local First Responders who have sacrificed and continue to do so. Who are the local first responders? Law enforcement, fire fighters, ambulance crews and Search and Rescue, hospital staff and their families. Wasatch county has been fortunate to have few deaths among first responders.

Two significant first responders who gave their lives were Deputy Blake Wright, Wasatch County Sheriff and a civilian county employee, Ralph Broadhead, who were killed when they were caught in the middle of a wildfire that had blown out of control in a state park on August 26th, 1990.

They were constructing a firebreak with a bulldozer when the fire overwhelmed them. Blake left behind a wife and six children. Ralph was lose to retirement and had served his whole life. First responders for years have kept our community safe, helping and rescuing, often in the dead of night or in dangerous circumstances. It is important to note that many of our community's first responders are volunteers.

Do you want to show gratitude for the heroes of 9/11 and American heroes from all times? Opportunities are everywhere each day. But, in addition, citizens in Heber Valley have arranged specific places and activities that will bring our community together as we serve. As this date approaches, maybe we can serve just a little more,

Saturday. September 10th this year, has been designated as the "Day of Service" with a variety of local activities to participate in. Bring your family and friends together to learn and share with each other that Americans are good and can be united in a great cause! Specific activities and information are available at: HeberValleyServes.org.

Where were you on the morning of September 11th, 2001? Most Americans recall with haunting memories the two hijacked US passenger airplanes, flown by the evil al-Qaeda terrorists that flew into the twin towers.

Riveted to the news unfolding, many Americans cried or clenched their fist as they viewed the crumbling towers. The vision of the compete demolition of the entire World Trade complex in Manhattan from the debris of the falling towers was only the start of the news that continued as a nightmare that day.

Shortly the nation and world listened to news of a third plane crashing into the Pentagon in Virginia. Finally, reports of a fourth plane crashing into a field in Pennsylvania as heroic passengers tried to fight the terrorists whose plan was to hit another American icon.

September 11 attacks, carried through by 9/11 al-Qaeda terrorists were the deadliest attacks on the US soil since the Pearl Harbor bombing in 1941 that launched the US into World War II. Through all this, as in the past with wars, the compassion and goodness of Americans resound.

The heroes of the forth plane, responders giving their lives, visionaries who created the 9/11 memorial and especially the Americans then and today who serve others without thought of their own needs, demonstrate the greatness America is about! They answer the evil of 9/11 today by serving and giving with a "National Day of Service."
