On September 11th, 2001 when the horrific events created by evil men unfolded, people in America and the world came to one another's aid in so many ways. Differences were put aside and help was rendered by First Responders and many others. We were Americans and friends of Americans that responded with compassion, service and many with their very lives.
As we remember those who sacrificed on 9/11, let us remember our own local First Responders who have sacrificed and continue to do so. Who are the local first responders? Law enforcement, fire fighters, ambulance crews and Search and Rescue, hospital staff and their families. Wasatch county has been fortunate to have few deaths among first responders.
Two significant first responders who gave their lives were Deputy Blake Wright, Wasatch County Sheriff and a civilian county employee, Ralph Broadhead, who were killed when they were caught in the middle of a wildfire that had blown out of control in a state park on August 26th, 1990.
They were constructing a firebreak with a bulldozer when the fire overwhelmed them. Blake left behind a wife and six children. Ralph was lose to retirement and had served his whole life. First responders for years have kept our community safe, helping and rescuing, often in the dead of night or in dangerous circumstances. It is important to note that many of our community's first responders are volunteers.
Do you want to show gratitude for the heroes of 9/11 and American heroes from all times? Opportunities are everywhere each day. But, in addition, citizens in Heber Valley have arranged specific places and activities that will bring our community together as we serve. As this date approaches, maybe we can serve just a little more,
Saturday. September 10th this year, has been designated as the "Day of Service" with a variety of local activities to participate in. Bring your family and friends together to learn and share with each other that Americans are good and can be united in a great cause! Specific activities and information are available at: HeberValleyServes.org.
