Another example of “If you build it, they will come”…. 22 American Golden-Plovers in breeding plumage showed up at a new private wetland developed in conjunction with the Iowa Dept. of Agriculture & Land stewardship and the local soil & water conservation district. Wetlands are filters that help clean our water and provide homes for many animals. These Plovers love short grass and they were using the corn field next to the wetland that had an emerging cover crop.

This is a Bald Eagle nest in the area that is monitored by a volunteer for the DNR. It has 3 young eaglets!
Eagles have made the long recovery road back from near extinction in Iowa. They now need new places to nest, so consider leaving those tall trees in your waterways. Wouldn’t it be exciting to host a family of these majestic birds on your land? Last year the DNR monitored 549 nests and 309 eaglets successfully fledged! This video was taken through a long distance spotting scope, so as to not disturb them. Fontana will hopefully be getting a new eagle soon, so consider donating to Friends of Fontana to support our donation for an updated raptor cage. We have Pay Pal and Venmo. Links are in the comments.
