Sakakawea Medical Center Hospice When a cure is not available, comfort is. Sakakawea Medical Center (SMC) Hospice specializes in comfort care.

Hospice is a program of care and support for patients and families coping with a terminal illness. Our program is designed to enhance and expand the existing support of a family. Our primary focus is pain and symptom management so the patient can have as much quality of life as possible within the limits of their disease process. Patients and their families are supported emotionally and spirituall

y and families receive bereavement services for a minimum of one year following the death of their loved one. Many hospice patients stay in their own homes or in their caregiver’s home. Some of our hospice patients live at Knife River Care Center (KRCC), or in Swing Bed at SMC. The hospice team helps wherever the patient calls “home.”
Hospice services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance. If the patient has no insurance, Hospice support is still available. While no one option is right for everyone, it’s important to know we do have options and can make choices. Every family who faces the loss of a loved one should know there is quality end of life care and support available through SMC Hospice.
