We know that, in one way or another, our children or youth will make mistakes. The real question is: when they do, will our response show them love, care, and guidance, or will it communicate rejection and judgment?
As parents and caregivers, the greatest influence on who our children become is not whether they make mistakes, but how we respond to those mistakes. Moments of failure can become opportunities for growth, trust, and learning when children know they are loved, supported, and held accountable with compassion. Our reactions today help shape the confidence, resilience, and character they carry into adulthood.

We’re kicking off the Immigrant Youth Forum on Self-Compassion and Mindfulness, led by Dr. Susan Gitau.
For teenagers, self-compassion, meditation, and emotional regulation are powerful tools for navigating stress, identity, and pressure. Learning to treat themselves with kindness instead of harsh criticism builds resilience, while meditation creates space to pause and notice thoughts without being overwhelmed by them.
Together, these skills strengthen emotional regulation, helping teens respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively, and giving them a foundation for better mental health, relationships, and decision-making.
