Four Hazel Park firefighters and two of their wives took on Detroit Free Press Marathonand Half Marathon!

Their dedication, hard work, and determination are a great reminder that pushing yourself, supporting one another, and setting goals can lead to incredible accomplishments.

Congratulations to all six on taking on this challenge and representing Hazel Park with pride! Your commitment to staying strong and supporting each other is something to be proud of.

Ever wondered what it actually feels like to suit up as a firefighter?

During Fire Department Week for our Citizens Academy, candidates got a firsthand taste of the job! Watch one of our candidates gear up, full turnout gear, air pack, mask, and helmet, and haul a hose line up the stairs.

Safe to say: it’s no walk in the park, but she passed with flying colors!

We are officially three weeks into our Citizens Academy! So far, our cohort has explored key areas of city operations:

Week 1: City Manager & Finance Director

Week 2: Police Department

Week 3: Fire Department

This Week: Recreation Department! 🎈 We're excited to give our participants an inside look at all the programs, events, and facilities that keep Hazel Park active and connected.

Too often in life, people are fighting battles no one sees. Whether someone is struggling to put food on the table, navigating a medical crisis, searching for a safe way out of a bad situation, or just trying to find footing, it’s far too easy for people to look the other way and think, “Someone else will handle it.”
The truth is, strong communities aren't built on looking away, they’re built on showing up for each other.
When someone is in need, having access to real, tangible support matters. Councilmember Alissa Sullivan put together an incredible hub of community resources, covering everything from local food pantries and cancer support to domestic violence resources, crisis assistance, and resident programs:

Mark your calendars! The Hazel Park Fire Department is hosting its annual Open House on Saturday, October 17, from 11 AM to 2 PM.

Bring the family by the station at 22830 Russell Ave for a fun day of live demos, activities for the kids, and some free treats.

25 years ago, our nation was tested, and our world changed forever.
We promised we would Never Forget.
We will always honor every life taken on September 11, 2001—in New York, at the Pentagon, and in a field in Shanksville. We remember the ordinary citizens who became heroes in an instant, and we honor every first responder and healthcare worker who answered the call. The firefighters charging up stairwells, the police officers holding the line, the paramedics in the street, and the doctors and nurses waiting at triage stations and emergency rooms ready to fight for every breath.
That day broke our hearts, but it showed what true service and courage look like:
* The frontline workers who ran toward the danger without hesitation to protect complete strangers.
* The tradesmen, medical crews, and volunteers who stood shoulder-to-shoulder on the pile and in the clinics for months doing the grueling work that had to be done.
* A nation that came together as one, putting everything else aside to lift each other up.
In the fire and emergency services, our duty is simple, show up for your neighbors on their worst day, no matter the cost. The greatest tribute we can pay to the fallen isn't just looking back in sorrow, it’s carrying that same dedication, quiet strength, and unity forward every day.
Take a moment today to remember the lost, check in on someone you care about, and keep the promise alive.
