By investing in both community outreach and medical research, we provide immediate resources for individuals in need today, while investing in research to correct social disparities for tomorrow's older adults.

Older adults are disproportionately targeted by employment and financial scams. The financial damage is one problem. The cascading housing risk is another.

Dennis lost a significant amount of money to a job scam while between positions. The shortfall pushed him toward eviction. State Emergency Relief, several community organizations, and a BSSOA partner agency layered support to close the gap. He is now employed, debt-free, and stably housed.

This Father’s Day, we are thinking about the older fathers and grandfathers who built Michigan’s neighborhoods, businesses, and families. The philanthropic world has too often overlooked them and we believe we can do better.

BSSOA funds micro-grants, delivered through vetted partner agencies, that help income-eligible Michigan adults 55 and older stay safe and independent at home. A railing, a recliner, a repair. Small investments with real outcomes.

If your work touches aging, caregiving, or community health, consider supporting or partnering with us.

Housing access is necessary but not sufficient. The day someone moves into a new apartment is often the day they discover what they cannot afford to bring with them.

Lethe moved into Warren Plaza on an income of $967 a month. She had no usable bed and was sleeping on an air mattress on the floor. Hannan Center social workers identified the need, and a BSSOA partner agency funded a new bed.

Move-in costs and basic furnishings remain a quiet bottleneck for older adults entering affordable housing. Share this story to widen the conversation.

Mobility events do not just affect a body. They redraw the floor plan of a person's home.

Laxmi and her husband live on roughly $1,400 a month. After a recent injury, the second floor of her own house, including her bed and full bathroom, became inaccessible. A single piece of equipment, a stair lift, brings both back.

BSSOA contributed alongside other local funders. This is exactly the kind of layered, partner-driven work that gets older adults safely home. We are looking for more partners.

Aging in place often comes down to small pieces of equipment that public benefits do not cover. A lift chair is one of them.

For Michael, that single item was the difference between confidently moving through his day and worrying about every transition. BSSOA partnered with a vetted Michigan agency to make sure he received it.

The philanthropic sector has historically underinvested in older adults. We are working to change that, one practical grant at a time.

Housing vouchers solve part of the affordability problem. They rarely cover the threshold costs that keep someone from actually moving in.

Linda earns about $1,014 a month and needed to relocate from Illinois to Dearborn to be near family caregivers. Her voucher was approved. The $500 deposit was not in reach. A BSSOA partner agency funded it and she is now in her new apartment, closer to support.

Closing this kind of small, specific gap is core to our model. Your donation funds the next one!

Financial scams are growing more sophisticated, and AI is making them harder to detect. Older adults are frequently targeted, and the cost is rarely just financial. It often includes lost confidence and a lasting sense of vulnerability.

Baldwin House Senior Living Hazel Park recently hosted a class to change that outcome. The class is part of the SAFE program (Successful Aging through Financial Empowerment), which BSSOA helps fund. It is led by Dr. Peter Lichtenberg, a Wayne State University professor of psychology and gerontology who also serves on the BSSOA board. Participants learn how scammers manufacture urgency and practice concrete prevention habits, including keeping a scam diary of suspicious contacts.

This is exactly the work BSSOA exists to support. We invest in research and prevention that address disparities in aging and help older Michiganders stay safe and independent. Donate today to help us fund more programs like SAFE.
