The Hazel Park School District is implementing several STEAM instructional initiatives for the 2017-2018 school year. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. K-12 STEAM education encompasses the processes of critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration in which students integrate the processes and concepts in real world contexts of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the arts, fostering the development of STEM skills and competencies for college, career, and life.
One of our short term goals is to build a strong the FIRST Robotics program. FIRST was started in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen. The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) programs aim to create passion for science and technology through robotics. The FIRST program encourages Gracious Professionalism, collaborative teamwork, and sportsmanship amongst teams even in the face of competition. Through FIRST, students build technical skills, and foster teamwork and leadership skills.
This year, we have launched a Rookie FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team at Hazel Park High School. Starting in January, FRC students, coaches, and mentors will work together over 6 weeks to design and construct a competitive robot to meet the season’s challenge. In addition to building a robot, students learn to spread their passion for science and technology in our community, raise funds to support building the robot, and manage a budget. FRC caters to a variety of interests: computer science, engineering, physics, math, graphic/video artistry, business, communications, and writing.
We are seeking businesses, community organizations, and community members to support our team and help Hazel Park School District expand our STEAM initiatives. We would welcome any support the community is able to provide whether it be volunteering at competitions or becoming a mentor.
