We are partnering with our friends at the Perry County Diabetes Coalition for a Tree Scavenger Hunt. Each week of the "Let's Get Moving Perry County" there will be a tree for you to find while you are out getting your active minutes in. If you are not tree-savvy, you can join us each week for a short and easy walk where our environmental educator, David Logsdon, will take your right to the tree of the week. This weeks tree is an Oak Tree. Whether you join us in person or find the tree on your own, you will be entered in a contest to win a hiking/walking starter kit. See the graphic below for full info.

🌲 Let’s Get Moving, Perry County! 🌲

Our movement challenge coincides with Tree Week, Kentucky’s annual celebration of urban and community forestry. To highlight this, we will be posting a new, native tree at the beginning of each week. Each participant who positively identifies the tree of the week and posts it here on Facebook with the hashtag will receive an extra entry into our prize drawing at the end of the challenge!

We will be hosting a group walk each week to identify these trees and check off movement for the day! Join us and David Logsdon, certified environmental educator, master naturalist, and certified interpretive guide, to learn more about the beautiful environment that surrounds us!

If you prefer to explore solo, that’s okay too!Whether it’s on your own property, downtown, on the trails, or anywhere else, we’re excited to hear about what you learn!

What a wonderful opportunity to learn about native plants and pollinators!

Cowan Community Action Group is pleased to launch a new Cowan Nature Series in partnership with naturalist Martina Hines, beginning with an engaging evening focused on native plants and pollinators in our Appalachian landscape.

This interactive presentation and discussion will explore:

What native plants are — and why they matter
Who our pollinators are and how they interact with plants
Fascinating examples of plant and insect relationships
Unique species found right here in our region
Simple ways to create pollinator-friendly spaces — even for beginners

Whether you’re an experienced gardener or someone who claims a “brown thumb,” this workshop offers practical ideas and inspiration for supporting pollinators and strengthening our local ecosystem.

Participants will also receive regionally native perennial plants to help jump-start their own pollinator-friendly spaces.

This workshop marks the beginning of an ongoing nature series with Martina Hines designed to connect people with the natural beauty, ecology, and stories of our region. Future programs will include seasonal native plant workshops, guided field experiences, and explorations of unique places such as Bad Branch and other remarkable landscapes in our area.

Join us for an evening of learning, conversation, and inspiration as we welcome spring and begin a new season of connecting with the natural world around us.
