Addressing the Hazard Lions Club on August 5, 1965, WSGS & WKIC News Director Virgil Walton Napier took on the subject of Professional Journalism.
He pushed back against how some outside media outlets portrayed Appalachia, calling their coverage distorted and unfair in ways that painted the whole region negatively. Real reporting, Napier argued, means checking the facts and delivering the truth without bias.
He emphasized the need for a more positive image of the area and promised that WSGS & WKIC would stay committed to objective reporting and promoting the region.
