The Mountain Fire Fighters Association, in conjunction with State Fire Rescue Training District 12, is honored to welcome Chief John Beatsch of the Southgate Volunteer Fire Department to the 48th Annual Hazard Fire School for a special presentation on the third deadliest nightclub fire in United States history.

On May 28, 1977, fire swept through the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky, killing 165 people and injuring hundreds more.

At just 21 years old, Chief Beatsch was a firefighter on the first-arriving engine company. He witnessed the incident firsthand and took part in the response and rescue operations that night. Nearly 50 years later, Chief Beatsch will share what he saw and experienced—from the initial response and rapidly deteriorating conditions to the challenges of locating and rescuing victims. He will also discuss lessons learned involving fireground operations, building construction, fire and life safety codes, emergency response, and firefighter training.

Hear the story from a firefighter who was actually there. Come listen. Come learn. Remember those who were lost. Pass the lessons on to your department.
