Garden Program

In our first year of operation, the Hayward Day Labor Center developed our Gardening Program. We address the workers’ depression, including its physical ailments, as well as obesity, diabetes, and bad nutrition by maintaining several garden sites.

Our center maintains two (2) garden sites and has two (2) Coordinadores (worker-leaders) that are responsible for running this program. The first garden site is next to the Hayward Day Labor Center on the Eden Youth and Family Center campus. Each year on Earth Day, April 22nd, we hold our annual celebration to open the garden. As part of our Earth Day activities, we have children from the local daycare program help seed the garden for the year. Through this interaction between the workers and local children we help build a positive relationship with the workers and neighborhood families.

Our second garden site is at the Hayward Community Gardens on Whitman Street, about a mile away from the Hayward Day Labor Center. We rent and are responsible for several plots of land and we have a collective of approximately ten (10) workers who schedule themselves to maintain both sites. The schedule includes watering, weeding, and harvesting. We provide our workers and our surrounding neighbors with fresh fruits and vegetables. We also donate any excess food to our local food banks.
