SCOPE will be out at Shue's pond in Hayward with Terry Peterson Fishing Foundation on June 24th supporting the WI DNR Fisheries crew and local volunteers for this fun event.

It's a low pressure introduction to fishing led by women anglers, with the goal of giving moms and others some tools for getting kids outside and fishing. So grab the kids and have some fun at the pond!

Sawyer County Outdoor Projects and Education (SCOPE) will be sponsoring a DNR Hunter Education course in Hayward starting on Tuesday, March 24th at the Hayward Middle School. Class times are from 5:30pm until 8:30pm on the 24th, and 6:00pm until 8:30pm on Thursday, March 26th and Tuesday, March 31st. There is also a morning class session from 8am until noon on Saturday, March 28th at the Hayward Rod and Gun Club. Students must attend all sessions to graduate, and there is an optional session Saturday afternoon where students get the opportunity to target shoot with .22 rifle, shotgun, and bow and arrow. On Saturday lunch will be provided free by SCOPE for youth students attending the optional afternoon session. For adults the meal cost is $10.00

In Wisconsin, Hunter Education is required of anyone born after January 1, 1973 who wishes to hunt without a mentor, but is also recommended for anyone with fi****ms in the home, or those who are interested in being involved in shooting sports besides hunting. Experienced SCOPE instructors deliver hands-on learning for safe firearm handling using DNR approved lesson plans, which also stress the importance of respect for others while hunting and handling fi****ms, and for general safety while afield or on the gun range. Instructors do not cover topics related to handgun carry and recommend that those interested in that training seek a DOJ approved course.

Pre-registration is required through DNR GoWild, and there is a $10 non-refundable course fee due the first night of class. Class size is limited to 30 students. A DNR customer number is required the first night of class. Youth graduates will get a free blaze orange hunting vest courtesy of SCOPE. Please remember when signing up that attendance at all class sessions is required for certification.

The next SCOPE Hunter Ed class will be scheduled for August, 2026.
