Most parks in western Kansas are not up to the Skatepark Association of the United States's recommended standards.http://www.spausa.org/SPAUSA_growth-trends.pdf
Currently the WeKanSk8 Committee is working to expand the skatepark in Hays, Ks. The park was build in 1996 and has seen little improvement over the last 16 years besides this spring when the wall separating the park from the hockey cour
t was finally taken down. The Skatepark Association of the United States (SPAUSA) recommends park size be 25,000 sq.ft. The current size of the Hays park is 4,500 sq.ft, significantly smaller than the recommendations and smaller than the minimum size ANY skatepark contractor would build. SPAUSA also states there should be one park per 30,000 population and the park should be 30,000 sq.ft. Hays, Ks, has a population of 20,000 and the recommended skatepark size is 20,000 sq.ft. Expanding into the attached hockey court would add 9,600 sq.ft and the addition of a bowl to the west would put the park up to recommended standards. Baseball, soccer, football, basketball and playground facilities are always being modernized and maintained in Hays so the kids don't have to play in the streets. With the lack of size and diversity of the skatepark it is pushing kids to that very place. The possibility of getting hit by a car or harassed is extremely high. The We.Kan.Sk8 Committee's goal is to educate the community how important it is to have a facility for skateboarding that is modern, safe and meets the recommended standards for skateboarding as a sport.
