Western Kansas Skatepark Committee (WE.KAN.SK8)

Western Kansas Skatepark Committee (WE.KAN.SK8) With the growing population of skateboarders in western Kansas there is still a lack of acceptable skateboarding facilities for kids to go. in size.

Most parks in western Kansas are not up to the Skatepark Association of the United States's recommended standards.http://www.spausa.org/SPAUSA_growth-trends.pdf

Currently the WeKanSk8 Committee is working to expand the skatepark in Hays, Ks. The park was build in 1996 and has seen little improvement over the last 16 years besides this spring when the wall separating the park from the hockey cour

t was finally taken down. The Skatepark Association of the United States (SPAUSA) recommends park size be 25,000 sq.ft. The current size of the Hays park is 4,500 sq.ft, significantly smaller than the recommendations and smaller than the minimum size ANY skatepark contractor would build. SPAUSA also states there should be one park per 30,000 population and the park should be 30,000 sq.ft. Hays, Ks, has a population of 20,000 and the recommended skatepark size is 20,000 sq.ft. Expanding into the attached hockey court would add 9,600 sq.ft and the addition of a bowl to the west would put the park up to recommended standards. Baseball, soccer, football, basketball and playground facilities are always being modernized and maintained in Hays so the kids don't have to play in the streets. With the lack of size and diversity of the skatepark it is pushing kids to that very place. The possibility of getting hit by a car or harassed is extremely high. The We.Kan.Sk8 Committee's goal is to educate the community how important it is to have a facility for skateboarding that is modern, safe and meets the recommended standards for skateboarding as a sport. Thank you so much everyone that came out to the city meeting to support the skatepark project, it is greatly appreciated!! :)

The city seemed to really be positive about it. Unfortunately they can't commit to funding the project at the moment. But once we get the ball rolling with the donation process we should be able to develop the park in a few phases.

What would you guys like to see first if we are able to put in the first phase in the next year?

Bowl?
Plaza elements?

Thanks guys!! Keep pushing!

The City Commission meeting for the Hays Skatepark Renovation has been moved again to Thursday, May 1st @ 6:30pm for the work meeting, and May 8th for the voting meeting.

We have huge support from the Parks Department and this is why the meeting is being pushed back again. They, and the WKSC, would like to be prepared as much as possible for the meeting.

This first meeting we are presenting on the need for renovation of the skatepark. We're doing it step by step by first getting the commissions blessing for the project and possible funding for a design team to come and survey the area, design a concept to scale, and give us a definitive budget number. After this process we will go back to the city and present the information and request municipal funding for expansion and renovation of the park. Whether this is done in a year or phased over a period of 2-5 years. This may seem like a long time but we have to keep in mind its still better than the current situation regardless of how long it takes. This project is on the agenda for the city and that is a big step forward.

Its easy to get upset and make demands from city officials but patience is a virtue and as long as we have our vision it will happen. :)

Below is an example concept design from our good friends at Spohn Ranch Skateparks. If you get a chance check out their website and skate their parks!

Just had an interview with Hays Daily today about our skatepark expansion effort! The story should be coming out the day after Christmas in the Hays Daily paper and also their website. Hopefully it will generate some good buzz and get more people on board to support the project.

Thanks to everyone who has supported and like our page so far, we really appreciate it :)
