SPAN of North Idaho

SPAN of North Idaho Our vision is that Idahoans choose to live. An official board was formed, bylaws and articles of incorporation written and SPAN Idaho was born.

A Brief History Of SPAN Idaho

In 2002, a small group of professionals working with the Adolescent Su***de Task Force and Idaho Su***de Prevention Services, wishing to establish a formal organization, decided to affiliate with the national network. In 2003, SPAN Idaho established partnerships and assisted in developing funding options for the development of the State Plan. Idaho’s Su***de Preventi

on Plan was completed and formally released at the November 2003 SPAN conference. 2003 also saw the development of the first SPAN Idaho regional chapter in Lewiston. Three other regional chapters were formed between 2004 and 2006. SPAN Idaho hired its first staff members in 2004 to begin implementation of the plan and held its fourth annual su***de prevention conference in Boise. In 2005, SPAN Idaho continued implementation of the state plan and held its fifth annual conference. In 2006, SPAN Idaho produced and distributed the SPAN Idaho Su***de Prevention Tool Kit and played a major role in the establishment and support of the Governor-appointed Idaho Council on Su***de Prevention. SPAN Idaho also held its sixth annual statewide su***de prevention conference. In 2007, SPAN Idaho conducted statewide prevention and post-vention trainings for clergy in eight locations around the state. The SPAN Idaho regional chapters held su***de prevention conferences in Twin Falls, Lewiston and Idaho Falls in 2007. In 2008, the annual statewide su***de prevention conference was held at the College of Idaho in Caldwell. SPAN Idaho Region 1 Chapter formed in 2004.

As a part of our su***de prevention efforts, Panhandle Health District’s Su***de Prevention Action Network of north Idaho (SPAN) provided the Veterans Outreach Center, Inc. $10,000 to continue their efforts to prevent su***de among veterans in Benewah county. The funds were generated from SPAN’s annual fundraising walk focused on remembering those lost to su***de and to raise awareness.

In 2020, su***de ranked the 9th most common cause of death in Idaho and claimed the lives of 421 Idahoans. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 57 Idaho veterans died by su***de in 2020.

Hank Thornton, a 73-year-old Vietnam veteran, is the founder of Veterans Outreach Center, Inc. Thornton began his work in Benewah county in 2018. He started by knocking on doors of veterans he thought might be at risk for su***de and connects them with resources. Now the foundation has grown and has a team to assist in knocking on doors, making phone calls, and helping those facing their darkest hour.
PHD’s SPAN of North Idaho has chapters based in Kootenai and Benewah counties and an affiliate group based in Bonner county. While su***de and non-fatal suicidal behavior are major public health problems across Idaho, they can be preventable.

SPAN is dedicated to su***de prevention through work hosting trainings and events, providing gun locks and resources, working towards zero su***de initiatives with the state.
