God changes hearts. And because of that, we have hope.

Ezekiel 11:19

I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.

May I pray for you?

"No. I'm fine."

After months of hearing this, even we were discouraged. And still we asked. Every time.

And then this same individual reached out and agreed to go to a faith-based recovery program. That was 2 years ago. Our friend's life has been transformed.

A lot can change in 3 days. In 3 days, Jesus conquered death. And He's still doing miracles today.

"I pray that the eyes of your heart may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at His right hand"
Ephesians 1:18‭b-‬20a

Ezekiel 34:11-12

“ ‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them.
As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.

Please pray for our friends who are homeless, addicted and battling the bitter cold.

"I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."

Psalms 18:1-2

Immanuel ... God with us!

Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

"Just have one drink."

"You used to be more fun."

"I'm not the one who has the problem."

Holidays can be especially hard for those abstaining from alcohol or in recovery; because many family holidays include or are even centered around alcohol.

Here are some ideas to consider in order to provide a safe, supportive environment during your holiday celebrations (feel free to share your own ideas, as well):

* Greatly limit or better yet, don't serve alcohol at all. Never push alcohol use. You may not even realize who struggles with addiction.

* Create new 'traditions' that don't include old, bad habits. Go to church, play games, and if your family isn't supportive, consider celebrating the holiday with non-family members who support your sobriety.

* Consider limiting the number of people you invite to a holiday dinner, keeping it small and quiet.

* Do not bring up past grievances.

* Adjust your expectations. If someone needs to leave early because they feel uncomfortable, or need to attend a support group meeting, show encouragement.

Sometimes, providing a safe haven during the holidays may be the greatest gift we can give to our loved ones.

‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:16‬

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

The weather has turned cold, especially for those who are homeless. In this season of giving, won't you consider donating a warm, functional ski jacket, a blanket, hat or gloves for our friends in Paterson?

Used jackets / blankets / gloves are welcome, but everything must be clean and the zipper on the jackets must work.

Donations may be dropped off at Hawthorne Gospel Church, the Chapel.

Thank you!

God is good. His love endures FOREVER. He remembers us when we're at our lowest. He frees us from our addictions! Now this is something to be thankful for!

Wishing you all a blessed Thanksgiving.

Psalms 136:1, 23-26
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
He remembered us in our low estate
His love endures forever. and freed us from our enemies.
His love endures forever.
He gives food to every creature.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of heaven.

His love endures FOREVER!

Recently, we brought someone to a long-term, faith-based recovery program. This was a big step for this person, and you could even say getting her to this point was a miracle. God opened many doors.

However, before I was even home, I started receiving messages from well meaning friends and relatives.

* "I'd like to check up on her."

*"Can I visit?"

*"Do you think she can get out for Thanksgiving? - You know, just for the day?"

*"What about Christmas?"

Holidays are especially hard for friends and relatives of people in long-term, faith-based recovery programs. What will people think of them? How will they explain the absence?

This info helped me when a family member was in a program:

* Consider if you had a relative in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) in the hospital. Would you ever consider taking them out - even for a day? A recovery program is like ICU.

* During the first month of treatment, there are usually no visits - even (especially) on holidays. The person getting treatment needs to become acclimated to their new environment. Visits may make both parties homesick and may make your loved one want to leave the program.

* It usually takes a long time (sometimes years) for an individual to seek help. It will also take a while for them to unpack the pain and trauma that brought them there. Just because a person is sober physically, doesn't mean they're ready to go home.

While your loved one is in treatment, you also should consider getting support. You may have developed unhealthy behaviors while living with someone who was addicted. Groups like Families Anonymous, Al Anon, Celebrate Recovery and Desire 4 Hope's Monday night support group: Christian Freedom from Addictions are all extremely helpful.

The holidays are especially tough when your family doesn't match up to the world's ideal. But there is hope. And it's not us. It's Jesus.

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."
