Food waste is defined as food thrown away at the retail and consumer level of the food chain; but food is wasted throughout the food chain, and it starts from the farm level and reaches the household level. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that one-third of all of the food produced for human consumption is wasted annually. According to the FAO, over 30% of food in the United S
tates is not eaten; that is a value of $162 billion wasted per year. Simple Future was founded on the idea that food waste must be reduced; in order to do that, students will go out into the community and develop composts, work on community gardens, and present to other students and community members about food waste and the effort put into food production. It is important to help people realize that there is a problem at hand. As the prices of food rise to accommodate the losses accumulated annually, people are starting to realize that there is a problem at hand. 2.8 trillion pounds of food is wasted globally per year, enough to feed billions of people; but, many still go hungry every day.
