National VFW Voice of Democracy and Patriot Pen scholarship essays:

Back in March our local high school participants shared their inspiring essays during the Sunday breakfast. Each participant received a certificate. In addition, the Voice of Democracy winner from District 4, Christian B. won a monetary prize and will go on to represent the Department at the state level competition! Hawthorne Post 2075 is very proud of these young students for their patriotism, poise, and dedication to their community.

Roger Morrissey
October 18, 1948 – December 30, 2025

It is with great regret and sadness that we announce the passing of Roger Morrissey - a pillar of VFW Hawthorne Post 2075 who served as Commander for 6 of the 35 years he was a member of the post.

Born as the oldest boy in a family of 11, from Winterset, Iowa, Roger grew up on a farm with his siblings. Ten years later, the family moved to Southern California where Roger finished grade school and high school. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968 and completed three tours in Vietnam. He finished his Army career after 9 ½ years.

He then went on to work in Aerospace his entire business career and completed his master’s degree while working.

After retirement, he actively served and contributed to many other civic and patriotic organizations:
· Member of the Vietnam Veteran Association, Chapter 53
· Member of Knights of Columbus
· Member of the American legion, Post 314
· Member of Blinded Veterans Association

As an elder statesman of the Post, Roger was a key figure in the annual Thanksgiving celebration for Veterans and for securing funding to keep the Post’s operations and programs running. He will be dearly missed as members at the post looked to him for his wise counsel, many years of experience and great stories.

Roger was a Hawthorne resident for 37 years and is survived by his wife Julie along with four children, 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

A celebration of Life will take place at the Post on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at 11 a.m.

Governor Newsom has signed SB 694 into law, protecting California's veterans from predatory "claim shark" practices.

What This Means:
SB 694, authored by Senator Bob Archuleta and co-sponsored by Attorney General Rob Bonta, prohibits unaccredited individuals and companies from charging fees to assist veterans with VA disability claims. The legislation also criminalizes unauthorized access to veterans' federal login credentials.

Your Organization's Role:
From the Organization to the individuals and the newly formed Rapid Response Team, we did it. Your support was instrumental in moving this bill through the Legislature. Your advocacy helped protect California's 1.6 million veterans from exploitation.

Key Provisions:
• Prohibits fees for VA claims assistance from non-accredited providers
• Makes violations a misdemeanor
• Voids predatory contracts
• Aligns California law with federal VA standards

Recommended Actions:
1. Share this victory with your membership
2. Remind members that free, accredited claims assistance is available through County Veterans Service Officers (CVSOs) and VSO's. Help your fellow brother or sister in arms find that credible representative.
3. Report any suspected claim shark activity to the Attorney General's office
