We strive to be a sustainable resource for our community as we respond to needs and cultivate meaningful relationships

North Kohala Community Resource Center was incorporated in the State of Hawaii as a nonprofit on February 13, 2002. NKCRC sponsors and supports individuals or groups who are creating projects that have the potential to enhance and sustain the North Kohala community. From its inception, NKCRC has been unique in its purpose to listen to the ideas and goals that residents of North Kohala have for their community, to act as a link for funding and education to create projects to support those ideas, and to assist in seeing those projects through to successful completion. Most importantly, NKCRC is a nonprofit established and led by diverse individuals who possess an historic and knowledgeable view of the community - with open minds for the future. Stop by to see us on the Akoni P**e Highway, on the west end of Hawi. Our office hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 am - 4 pm and Friday 9 am - 1 pm.

We've had several people ask, what is a monsoon trough? A monsoon trough is basically a broad area of convergence with trade winds to the north and westerlies to the south. If you look at the streamline analysis below, you can see the monsoon trough extending thousands of miles from the western Pacific, where it usually resides. Only during strong El Nino years, do we see the monsoon trough extending into the Central Pacific. Which is what makes this an unusual event.

So now for the more important information, a Flood Watch remains in effect starting Tuesday morning. While we are expecting rain to start moving in from the south on Tuesday, the heaviest rain bands looks to be Tuesday night into Wednesday night, with most likely area of the heaviest rain expected to be between Oahu and Maui County. But due to the widespread tropical moisture, the threat for flash flooding will exist anywhere across the state. With any thunderstorms, extreme rainfall rates will be possible with damaging gusty winds. Stay safe! Turn around, don't drown!
