ChurchDay ChurchDay (formerly Thursday Club) is an active choir that serves at the 12pm mass every 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month at St.

Peter Chanel in Hawaiian Gardens. We also sing for special services and events.

“Were you there when they crucified my Lord?” is more than a hymn. It is a question that draws us into the moment of the Cross.

Rooted in the tradition of African American spirituals, this song was born out of suffering, resilience, and faith during slavery in the United States. It places the singer at the foot of the Cross, not as a distant observer, but as someone who knows what it means to endure pain, injustice, and still hope for redemption.

For us Catholics, especially during Holy Week, it becomes deeply personal. The question is no longer just historical. It becomes spiritual. Were we there? In our sins, in our brokenness, in the ways we fail to love. It reminds us that Christ meets us there and does not abandon us.

On Palm Sunday, as we welcome Christ as King, we’re reminded that He freely enters into suffering. Psalm 22 invites us to bring our own pain and struggles before God without holding back, trusting that He is not removed from our experience; He has entered into it Himself. In Jesus, God meets us right in the depths of our humanity.
