Duck bills aren’t just for looks, they’re survival tools built for each species’ needs.

Mallards use wide, flat bills to filter seeds and plants, while shovelers’ oversized ‘spoonbills’ sift through mud for tiny organisms. Sea ducks have powerful bills to pry shellfish, mergansers sport serrated bills to grip fish, and wood ducks use tapered bills to snap up acorns and insects. Even bill color changes, like a drake mallard's bright yellow bill in spring, play a role in finding a mate.
