Harford County Lafayette Bicentennial Committee Welcome to the Harford County Lafayette Bicentennial Committee page. This is the place for official news for the bicentennial celebration in Harford County, MD.

Together the nation will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Farewell Tour of General Lafayette, tracing his path in 1824-1825 across the U.S. before he returned to France. Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, known by most simply as Lafayette or General Lafayette, served as a major general in the Continental Army under George Washington’s command during the American Revolutionary War. Know

n as a talented strategist and an ardent supporter of the new country and the principles outlined in its constitution, he is perhaps best known (nationally) for successfully negotiating military support from France to turn the tide in Washington’s favor. In Harford County however, he is best known for inspiring the name of the city of Havre de Grace. Lafayette made several trips through Harford County during the American Revolution and returned as “Guest of the Nation” in 1825. Throughout 2024-2025, the American Friends of Lafayette (AFL) will host programming across the United States to commmemorate the Bicentennial of Lafayette’s return to America. The Harford County Committee has planned a multi-faceted celebration of the life and accomplishments of Major General Lafayette and his time in Harford County, culminating in a festival on July 29, 2025. Stay tuned to this page for details about our plans!
