ON THE ROAD WITH THE HAVERSTRAW BRICK MUSEUM 🚗

We recently visited glengary.com at their Mid-Atlantic plant to test prototype bricks for our new museum building.

Pictured here is what happened when we designed our bricks to be too big. The water content in the brick mixture didn't have enough room to escape, got stuck in the middle, and created this blackening affect. In turn, this brick is less structurally sound.

While these bricks are now made in a factory setting with advanced machinery - as opposed to Haverstraw's open yards - the brick recipe, molded method, and process has largely remained unchanged over the past century.

When tour and school buses visit the Museum, they often have to take specific routes so that they don't get stuck. Village streets were originally constructed for horse and carriage.

Pictured is a former carriage house on 2nd Street. The houses are easily spotted by their large doors, big enough for the animals to get through.

Behind the scenes at the Haverstraw Brick Museum 🎬

As we prepare to erect our new museum building, drpilla.com recently conducted borings in our brick basement to see how deep the building's foundation goes, and if it could be utilized in new construction. The foundation remains from the former three story O.N. Rosenberg & Son hardware store, which burned down in 1950.

The foundation is comprised of bricks from Haverstraw brickmakers "W.B" (William Bennett) and "[De]NBCo" (DeNoyelles Brick Company).

Learning history is one thing, but understanding how it's affected your neighborhood is another.

Some of our past elementary school visitors came to see the Great Landslide of 1906 diorama, and to identify what brick they collected at Emeline Park!

Pictured is what is believed to be the house of Benjamin Benson (also known as the Allison-Peck house). Benson purchased the property in 1757, when the home was probably erected. He was a signer of the Articles of Association, a member of the Committee of Correspondence, and a soldier who, due to promoting boycotts against British goods, “drew the enmity of Tories” in Haverstraw, according to historian Rosalie B. Fellows.

On August 7, 1779, he was found dead with wounds in his back. Some accounts say he was killed by British spies on his farm by shooting, others by bayonet stabbing.

The home was the last remaining Dutch-colonial sandstone in Haverstraw. While it still stands, it has largely been renovated and the historical marker has since been removed.
