NAMI Northeast Essex Affiliate

NAMI Northeast Essex Affiliate NAMI Northeast Essex Affiliate educates and advocates for mental health. NAMI's, nami.org, headquarter's is in Arlington, VA.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI, is the oldest grassroots non-profit mental health organization in the country. Our volunteers represent people who are affected by mental illnesses, and the families, friends and loved ones who care for them. State affiliates (our affiliate is NAMI Mass) divide into state and county regions. We are proud to be members and volunteers of the NAMI Northe

ast Essex Affiliate, NNEA. Our geographic area encompasses Amesbury to Rowley and Newburyport to Haverhill. Of course, people located in other regions are always welcome to join us. The members of our organization are not healthcare providers. Our members have learned to cope skills because of knowledge from personal experiences with mental health conditions, or from caring and supporting others who have them. One of our goals is to unite as a community where there is empathy, not judgment; conversation, not silence; and engagement, not withdrawal. We advocate ending stigma and discrimination associated with mental health conditions. NNEA is proud to offer facilitated support groups, including the Family Support Group and the Connections Recovery Support Group. We meet every first and third Thursdays of the month. See our website for detailed information: naminortheastaffiliate.org. Also, we periodically host relateable, educational programs such as In Our Own Voices, where brave folks who are managing mental illnesses share, 'in their own voices': their inspiring stories – with humor and dignity – about how they manage.

Hi! I would like to invite you to join me in supporting NAMIWalks 2026, the largest and most vibrant mental health event in the United States. This year, NAMIWalk takes place on May 16 at the Boston Common. We are raising funds for our affiliate, NAMI Northeast Essex, and NAMI Mass, our state organization.

Here are some of the programs we sponsored last year:

1. Our ongoing support groups meet twice monthly: Family and Friends Support Group and Connections Recovery support group for people living with mental illness.

2. In Our Own Voice – in two Haverhill locations, Northern Essex Community College and the Universalist Unitarian Church in Haverhill.

3. Mental Health First Aid Training Co-sponsored by NAMI Greater North Shore. For my family, the NAMI Mass Helpline, called NAMI Compass, helped resolve issues with medication changes and insurance coverage. Compass is free for anyone to call to get help for friends, neighbors, or family members, providing resource referrals, emotional support, information about treatments, and help navigating the system of care.

For the 1 in 5 families impacted by mental illness, the need for better information, services, and support can be daunting. Both our local affiliate and the state organization work hard to provide much-needed advocacy, education, and support every day. NAMI also promotes critical awareness here in northeast Massachusetts and beyond, further building our inspiring, borderless mental health community.

Many thanks,
Joanna, President, NAMI Northeast Essex Affiliate.

NAMI Mass is a nonprofit which seeks to improve the quality of life for people living with mental health conditions, their families, & their caregivers.

On May 8th, the Senate Ways and Means Committee released its budget proposal, which included important steps forward for mental health services. We’re grateful for this progress — and with your continued advocacy, we can ensure the final budget fully meets the needs of our communities

We are asking our community to take action by sending a pre-written email to your state senator, urging them to support five key mental health amendments. To email your senator and read more about these amendments, visit: https://namimass.quorum.us/campaign/124599/

Your voice matters deeply, and we’re truly grateful for your continued support and advocacy.

NAMI is deeply alarmed following the release of the administration's funding proposal for Fiscal Year 2026, which seeks unprecedented and drastic funding cuts across the federal government. While the proposal is high-level without specifics on all programs that may be impacted, the extent of possible cuts could be devastating for people with mental illness.
