🐾 A Quick Look at April at Havelock Animal Control 🐾

I was looking over the April report and thought I'd share a few numbers with everyone.

Before anyone asks, no, I don't have May's numbers yet. Those reports typically lag behind a bit, so for now we're taking a look at the most recent completed month available, which is April.

During April, Havelock Animal Control took in 107 animals. Of those, 23 were dogs and 84 were cats, which tells you kitten season is definitely here whether we like it or not.

The shelter also had 84 total outcomes during the month. That includes adoptions, transfers to rescue partners, dogs reunited with their owners, and unfortunately a small number of non-live outcomes.

One thing that stood out to me was that while 107 animals came in, only 84 left. That means the shelter ended the month with a net increase of 23 animals still in their care.

That's the reality of animal sheltering. Animals continue to come through the doors every week, often faster than they can leave through adoption, rescue placement, or owner reunification.

Looking deeper into the report, 77 of the month's outcomes were positive live outcomes. Rescue partners helped move 63 animals into rescue placements, 10 dogs were reunited with their owners, and 14 animals found adoptive homes.

The report also shows 7 non-live outcomes for the month. While nobody likes seeing those numbers, it's important to understand what they mean. Havelock Animal Control operates as a no-kill shelter. No-kill does not mean zero euthanasia. It means every reasonable effort is made to save healthy and treatable animals, with euthanasia generally reserved for severe medical conditions, significant suffering, or situations where it is the most humane option.

At the end of the day, these aren't just numbers on a report. Every intake, adoption, transfer, reunion, and outcome represents an animal that needed help and people working to give that animal the best possible chance.

As always, thank you to the shelter staff, volunteers, rescue partners, adopters, and supporters who help make those positive outcomes possible.

What started as a crazy idea, a lot of hard work, and a love for great seafood has turned into something we never could have imagined. Over the past year, we’ve learned lessons the hard way, made mistakes, celebrated victories, survived long days, late nights, breakdowns, weather, and everything else the food truck world could throw at us.

Most importantly, we’ve met some incredible people along the way!

From our very first event, this community showed up for us. You shared our posts, told your friends, stood in line for lobster, welcomed us into your towns, invited us to your events, and supported a small family-owned business from day one.

Because of YOU, we’ve served thousands of customers, traveled thousands of miles, expanded into South Carolina, sponsored local talent, created jobs, and turned a dream into a reality.

To every customer, event organizer, brewery, business owner, fellow food truck operator, friend, and family member who has supported us, thank you! We wouldn’t be here without you!
