in 1882 the Knights of Columbus was officially incorporated, bringing Blessed Michael McGivney’s vision for a Catholic fraternal benefit society to fruition.

This pewter figurine depicts Father Michael J. McGivney at St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Connecticut, where the Knights began, standing before table displaying symbols of the Order's emblem. Today Founder’s Day is recognized by more than 2 million Knights in over 16,000 councils across the globe.

Today we celebrate the Memorial of St. Francis!

Handsome and courteous, he was a favorite among the nobility. As a young knight he took part in a battle and later was taken prisoner. After his release he became seriously ill, and while reflecting he had a profound conversion experience.

He gave up his frivolous life, cut off his family ties, and embraced a life of extreme penance and poverty. While praying before a crucifix in the church of San Damiano in Assisi he received a call from Christ to rebuild the Church, “which had fallen into ruin.”

St. Francis followed Christ in a radical manner by patterning his new life after the example of the Apostles in the most literal way possible: he dressed as a poor peasant, worked odd jobs for food, and went through the countryside preaching repentance, love of Jesus, and peace. His joyful, radical way of life attracted followers, and with them he founded the Order of Friars Minor and the Poor Clares.

Two years before his death he became the first known saint to receive the stigmata. His holiness was so widely attested that only two years after his death the Church proclaimed him a saint. St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of peace, ecology, the environment, animals, Italy, merchants, and families!

Key begins with K, but this key does not open a door. Ornate ceremonial keys have long been used to commemorate important events, with this key created in 2012 for the 130th Supreme Convention held in Anaheim, California. This die-cut polished brass key shows the Knights of Columbus emblem at the end of the blade. The long neck features the famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, while the key's handle is composed of four roundels, each with a different regional or historic highlight.

I is represented by this page from an Knights of Columbus insurance membership ledger for San Salvador Council 1. It shows founder Father Michael J. McGivney as the first entry. The subsequent entries are other founding members with information regarding their age, birthplace, occupations, and date of initiation into the Knights.

The original insurance program served to provide assistance for widows and orphans of members, whose loss of a breadwinner would risk being separated by the state. The Knights of Columbus insurance continues Blessed Michael McGivney’s mission to protect families by expanding its products to include retirement annuities, long term care insurance, and other programs for members and their families.
