Our Story
Aldersgate is an urban mission project of Main Street
United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg, MS. The
mission started June 11, 1972 in a rundown old house.
The idea had begun with a women’s prayer group
praying for direction in finding a home mission. In
time, their prayer was answered. They saw the need,
sensed the opportunity, and provided leadership
to the congregation. The name “Aldersgate” was
selected for the mission because John Wesley’s
“heart was strangely warmed” in a house on a London
street by that name. From that experience, he and
his brother Charles started a revival that changed
history and men’s hearts.
Aldersgate now occupies a small concrete building
that is located in and targets the youth of the
Briarfield Housing Project, as well as the surrounding
area. Briarfield is a lower-income housing project.
Most children are single parent, latch-key children.
Aldersgate gives the children a positive place to
gather after school and all day during the summer. An
annual highlight of the summer program is Vacation
Bible School which is a cooperative venture with the
youth and children of Main Street.
Year-round, Aldersgate reaches some 66 – 88
children on a regular basis. Daily activities are
maintained through a Director, 5-6 staff, and many
dedicated volunteers.
