Big News for MAMFT and Mental Health Care in Mississippi

We are proud to share that House Bill 479—amending provisions related to the Universal Recognition of Occupational Licenses Act (UROLA)—was officially signed into law by Governor Tate Reeves on Monday, March 23, 2026.

This legislation specifically amended UROLA for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) and Psychologists, strengthening licensure pathways and improving access to care across Mississippi. By clarifying and enhancing temporary practice provisions—including a pathway for up to 365 days of practice while licensure is processed—it allows qualified professionals to begin serving individuals, couples, and families more efficiently while maintaining rigorous educational, supervisory, and testing standards.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Representative Lee Yancey, who sponsored the bill in the House, and Senator Kevin Blackwell, who guided its passage in the Senate.

We are also deeply grateful for the dedicated work of our lobbyists, Serena Flowers and Chip Reno, whose leadership and persistence were instrumental in this success.

Finally, thank you to our MAMFT members and supporters who advocated, engaged, and helped move this forward.

The American Red Cross is urgently seeking Marriage and Family Therapists and other licensed mental health professionals available to volunteer and deploy nationally to large-scale disasters, including those communities impacted recently by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Red Cross Disaster Mental Health volunteers support disaster survivors, responders, and impacted communities by using their specialized skills to manage disaster-related stress and build individual and community resilience.

Eligibility: To be eligible to volunteer with the Disaster Mental Health program, volunteers must have a Master's Degree or above in one of the following mental health fields, and hold a current, unencumbered license from, or is registered with, any U.S. state or territory as a Marriage and Family Therapist, Social Worker, Psychologist, Professional Counselor, School Counselor, or Psychiatrist at any level of license/registration.

Please join us for an informational session on Wednesday, November 13th at 1-2pm EST/10-11am PT with the American Red Cross Disaster Mental Health leadership to learn more about this important opportunity.
