A pastor came to the ranch a few months ago and spent three days without saying a word.

For the first time in years, nobody needed anything from him. He was somewhere he could just stop.

He called it the best week of his sabbatical.

He didn't pay a dime to be here. Neither did the eighty other ministry families who stayed so far this year. Every one of them came for free, because monthly partners cover the cost.

Most pastors won't ask for that kind of help. They'll keep going until they run out, and nobody around them will know until it's too late. We built this place for them.

Should pastors take a sabbatical? Is their job more stressful than most jobs in the secular workforce?

Barna found that pastors with excellent mental and emotional health dropped from 39% to 14% in just 8 years.

Yes, we think sabbaticals are important. Rest was something God wired into creation.

Maybe pastors could model why more people, including the secular workforce, should find a rhythm of rest in their lives?

A senior pastor and his wife are at the ranch this week as part of their sabbatical.

When he was asked what he wanted to do, he said: “I just want to go somewhere quiet where I can think, breathe, pray, and hear from God. A chance to slow down and be quiet.”

That’s it. That’s all he wanted.
