Forrest County, Mississippi
The residents and citizens of Dixie community and surrounding areas of Forrest County, Mississippi strongly oppose the installation of a Loves Travel Stop located at the intersection of Elks Lake Road, Ira Hudson Road, and Hwy 98 on which roads we live and travel, including countless children who attend Dixie Attendance Center (790 Elks Lake Road, Hattiesburg, MS which is less than 2 miles from the proposed Loves Travel Center site). WE THEREFORE PETITION THE FORREST COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS TO INTERVENE AND MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO STOP THE PLANNED LOVES TRAVEL/TRUCK STOP INSTALLATION AT THE INTERSECTION OF ELKS LAKE ROAD, IRA HUDSON ROAD, AND HWY 98 FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS:
1. The traffic will be dramatically increased in all directions surrounding Elks Lake Road, Ira Hudson Road, and HWY 98 near Dixie Community Exit. The existent roads, streets and bridges do not meet the minimum standards to support construction of a large truck stop and the dramatic increase in commercial traffic it will attract. Dangerous 18-wheeler traffic will destroy the essence of our community and infringe upon the health and safety of residents.
2. A large commercial truck stop will attract temporary and transient residents and detract from the cohesive individual property ownership and residential homes now existing adjacent to proposed Loves Travel Stop site. Consequently, prospective buyers will unlikely be drawn to the area and property values will surely be adversely affected.
3. Crime studies across the nation show a dramatic increase in crime in and around truck stop locations. Truck stops are linked to drug trafficking, human trafficking, prostitution, theft, and violent crimes. Just one fentanyl overdose, one child abduction or one school bus accident will destroy Dixie community forever.
4. A commercial truck stop will have dangerous sewage runoff, idling trucks that produce excessive noise and dangerous environmental fumes 24 hours per day. There is an increased risk of hazardous chemical spills and leaks from transporting trucks and large under and above ground fuel tanks.
5. The truck stop would pose various environmental risks to the nearby homes/neighborhoods caused by air pollution from diesel exhaust, noise pollution, light pollution, and many other negative environmental factors. By allowing a large commercial truck-stop to be built so close to several hundred personal residences the Forrest County Board of Supervisors will be adversely affecting the health and safety of surrounding residents in favor of an out of state corporation.
