πŸ“£We are on track to release 4,000 mile-a-minute weevils in Calhoun County -- this weevil reproduces exclusively on mile-a-minute w**d and has been utilized on the east coast for over 20 years! Adding this to our management strategy will save time, and reduce herbicide use.

Come across an extra large hornet?! This is most likely the european hornet!
These are still non-native, but smaller and less damaging than the northern giant hornet, sometimes referred to as murder hornet. Just look for the "paint drips" on the abdomen (butt), if you get close enough.

That population of murder hornets in the State of Washington has been classified as eradicated (see comments for more on that).

European hornets can still be aggressive so reach out to local pest control if you think you have a nest.

Rest in pieces, invasive species.

Six invasive plants were added to the state's restricted & prohibited species list this week under the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act.

Guided by rigorous scientific review and more than 2,000 public comments, Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development - MDARD listed common & glossy buckthorn, Callery (Bradford) pear and Japanese barberry as restricted species. Effective Jan. 1, 2028, it will be unlawful to introduce, import, sell, distribute or propagate these species. Water hyacinth and water lettuce are now listed as prohibited species with similar restrictions taking effect June 19.

Property owners are not considered in violation if these species are already established on their property but retailers are prohibited from selling these plants which can damage or destroy Michigan's native ecosystems.

Get near this tree, and you'll be making the second face!
We love supporting pollinators with trees, but the Callery or Bradford pear has got to go! like this one can spread quickly and provide minimal benefits. Callery Pear is known for its fishy-smelling flowers this time of year.

Minnesota researchers have potentially found a fungal solution to emerald ash borer.

University of Minnesota researchers say they’ve discovered several naturally occurring parasitic fungi that could be weaponized against the invasive beetles responsible for killing millions of ash trees across Minnesota and the eastern United States.
