YES Team - Helping Kids Succeed - The Hastings Way Helping all kids in Hastings, MN develop strong and healthy webs of support with the adults in their lives. More is better!

Every child and teen needs a strong and healthy "web of support." This web is formed by caring adults who cast "strings," or protective factors. The more protective factors a young person has, the more likely they are to grow into a successful adult. We encourage adults and kids to ensure each child has at least 5 adult "Anchors" in their web. In turn, each Anchor needs the support of other adults

to form their own healthy webs. Research supports the notion that an optimal number of Anchors for any one child is 5. The fewer Anchors a child or teen has, the fewer protective factors in their lives, and the more likely they are to engage in risky behaviors. To encourage healthy behavior, add more strings from more Anchors! "Strings" can range from the tangible (safe home, nutritious food, ease of reading, appropriate clothings, etc.) to the intangible (curiosity, integrity, compassion, laughter, gratitude, self-respect, self-regulation, etc.). Kids "catch" these strings from adults - they don't absorb them from the air! Taking the time to be a strong Anchor in a child's web is one of the best contributions an adult can make to their own community and the world in general. Kid's webs can experience "scissor cuts," like divorce, death of an Anchor, medical diagnosis, etc. The solution to those serious events is to strengthen their webs, by adding more strings from more Anchors. Community norms also have a powerful influence on a teen's web. If the norm in the community is to allow underage drinking, for example, all the lectures, posters, and announcements to "don't drink" will have limited impact. On the other hand, positive community norms can have a powerful protective influence as well. Our goal is to help all 6,000+ kids in Hastings have strong webs of support - they each deserve nothing less.

More science supporting the concept that Anchors are the key ingredient to help children develop resilience. One adult is critical - we encourage 5 for optimal development.

When we talk about the Helping Kids Succeed "model," we refer to Anchors. These are adults who have a significant impact in the lives of the young people around them.

But, can we dig a little deeper into just what makes a strong anchoring relationship so important? Yes!

As identified by Search Institute, strong anchoring relationships mean adults express care, challenge growth, provide support, share power and expand possibilities.

Are you creating strong anchoring relationships with the young people around you?

When we talk about "creating webs of support" with the Helping Kids Succeed model - it applies to both kids AND adults. Strong friendships are extremely important for men and women.

"In a survey published by the AARP in 2010, we learn that one in three adults aged 45 or older reported being chronically lonely. Just a decade before, only one out of five of us said that. And men are facing the brunt of this epidemic of loneliness. Research shows that between 1999 and 2010 su***de among men, age 50 and over, rose by nearly 50%. The New York Times reports that β€œthe su***de rate for middle-aged men was 27.3 deaths per 100,000, while for women it was 8.1 deaths per 100,000."

Powerful article with some strong opinions, but well worth the read....

An epidemic of loneliness is killing millions of American men. Here’s why.

We would add "help your child develop a strong and healthy web of support with you and other adults, including teachers."

As a parent, you are your child's first and most important teacher. When parents and families are involved in their children's schools, the children do better and have better feelings about going to school. In fact, many studies show that what the family does is more important to a child's school su...

Having strong, healthy webs isn't just for kids and teens! Adults most certainly need webs of support...throughout their lives.

"Many of their friends came through work, but those friendships tend to fade away when the job ends. There are older people who feel unneeded. There are younger people who feel lost. Somehow these longing souls never find each other."
