Slightly edited repost: In a meeting this week, they announced the closure of all three Saint Paul encampments. This is roughly 450 people. After these closures, the city of Saint Paul will make camping illegal.
The mayors office did not coordinate with most of us working in homeless services about this plan prior to making it. Representatives from both Catholic Charities and Model Cities made the mayors office aware that there is no shelter space. Ramsey County let them know that there are already 1,400 people on the housing list waiting for housing, so housing is also not an option. Public health and healthcare for the homeless highlighted the risk of death in closing these spaces…and the mayors office basically responded by telling everyone to “get on board.” Again, all of this was a surprise to those of us who work with our unsheltered communities because we were not consulted.
What this means is that we will have a flood of people back onto the streets with little to no options for safety.
This is so irresponsible and wrong.

I believe every person deserves dignity, and every neighborhood deserves to be safe. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.
If St. Paul is moving toward closing its homeless encampments, then there needs to be a clear, public plan for where people will go before those closures happen.
I’m asking city leaders to pause any widespread encampment closures until there is a coordinated placement plan that includes shelter, treatment, mental health services, and continued outreach.
For years, I’ve been building relationships with people living in these encampments. I’ve watched trust lead people into detox, treatment, and recovery. When people are scattered without a plan, those relationships are broken, and the path to recovery becomes even more difficult.
This petition isn’t about keeping people homeless.
It’s about making sure we don’t replace one crisis with another.
