We are just about a week away from Captain Josh Burchick presenting at the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School as part of the Cape and Islands Fire Chiefs Association Lecture Series.

Josh has presented at FDIC, Training Days and countless other venues. He brings a real life perspective to a mission to create durable, resilient firefighters through physical, mental, and emotional performance.

Josh will present 3 classes over the course of the day:

7005 Woodscape Drive contains an overview of the incident leading up to the 2018 LODD of Lt. Nathan Flynn, the events surrounding the mayday, the RIT operation, and the several challenges faced on the incident. The presentation also covers the development of training programs for company officers.

In-Extremis Readiness is the research, theory, and application for mayday events. This class will discuss the five personal attributes required of the firefighter, leadership and psychology affecting human and team performance, metabolic data from real mayday events showcasing the need for physically fit and emotionally regulated firefighters, and basic tactics to get you out of the five most common mayday events.

Safety Culture & Risk Aversion discusses the common cultural, behavioral, and psychological factors affecting safety and risk aversion in the fire service, and how to develop grit for our profession.

CIFCA executive board member And Falmouth Fire Chief Tim Smith.

Falmouth Fire Rescue Department Chief Timothy R. Smith sat in his office on Tuesday morning, January 6, among small but growing piles of paperwork, office knick-knacks, photographs and other evidence of a nearly 40-year career with the department, waiting to be sorted and packed up.

Smith is set to retire on January 23. He sat down with the Enterprise to review his tenure as well as his hopes for the next occupant of his position.

After 39 years, Smith said, he is ready to enjoy those special Falmouth moments like the Fourth of July fireworks and the Falmouth Road Race for the first time as a regular resident, rather than a first responder.

“The job is 24/7/365,” Smith said. But, he added, the department of dedicated professionals and the respectful and supportive Falmouth community have made his job “the best job in the world.”
