Trail Stewardship during Freeze/Thaw Cycles

As winter transitions to spring, freeze/thaw cycles combined with snowfall can significantly impact our trails. During this period, it's crucial to be mindful of our hiking practices to protect the natural environment.

Why Trails Are Vulnerable

- Freeze/Thaw Cycles:As temperatures fluctuate, the ground can freeze overnight and thaw during the day, making the soil soft and muddy.
- Snow Accumulation:Snow can conceal wet trails, leading to unexpected muddy conditions.

Leave No Trace Principles

To minimize our impact on the environment, please keep these Leave No Trace** principles in mind:

1. Stay on Trails:When walking, remain on designated paths to prevent damage to surrounding vegetation.

2. Muddy Sections:If you encounter a muddy or wet area, try to hike through it rather than around it. Walking around can compact the soil and harm nearby plants, leading to trail erosion.

3. Timing Matters:Get out early in the morning while the ground is still frozen. (Unless too icy)This reduces soil disturbance and makes for a more enjoyable hiking experience.

Best Practices for Hiking in Wet Conditions

- Hike Through the Mud: If you find yourself on a muddy trail section, step directly through the water and mud to minimize damage.

- Avoid Creating New Trails: Refrain from stepping off the main path to avoid puddles, as this contributes to trail widening and vegetation loss.

By following these practices, we can help preserve the beauty of our trails and ensure they remain accessible for everyone.

From our partners at York Nordic

Ever go out for a quick walk… and somehow end up doubling your distance? That’s the walking pole effect.

They Share the Work - When you use poles, your arms join in. That full-body rhythm, similar to techniques taught for Nordic walking, makes movement feel smoother and more natural. When walking feels easier, you keep going.

They Reduce Joint Fatigue - Poles help take pressure off your knees and hips by redistributing impact. Nordic walking, which originated in Finland, is known for reducing joint strain compared to regular walking. Less discomfort = fewer reasons to turn around.

They Improve Posture Automatically - Poles encourage you to stand taller and breathe better. Better alignment means better endurance, without extra effort.

They Boost Confidence - Uneven terrain feels more manageable with two extra points of contact. More stability means you’re more likely to keep exploring.

Bottom line, walking poles make walking feel smoother, more balanced, and less taxing. You’re still working hard, it just doesn’t feel that way. And when movement feels good you naturally go longer.

Now, Let's Get Out There!

“I’ll start later” is the promise that keeps people stuck.

Hey,

If you’re like most people, you’ve probably told yourself things like:

- “I’ll start when I have more time.”
- “I’ll get out walking later.”
- “I just need things to slow down first.”

But here’s the truth — that “perfect moment” never shows up on its own.

Life doesn’t magically open up space.

Time doesn’t suddenly appear.

And waiting usually just turns into another year passing by, with the same tired legs, the same low energy, and the same “I wish I’d started sooner” feeling.

What does change everything is a simple decision:

To lace up your shoes.
To grab your poles.
To step outside — even for 10–20 minutes.

You don’t need to be super fit.

You don’t need to wait for the weather, the season, or your schedule to be perfect.

You just need to begin.

- No huge time commitment.
- No special conditions.
- Just one small walk that says, “My health and my happiness matter.”

Because here’s the honest part most people avoid:

If you don’t start now,
later will look exactly like today.

Your future self — the one with stronger legs, better balance, more confidence, and that calm Cape Cod smile after a good Cape Cod Nordic walk — is quietly hoping you’ll take that first step today, not someday.

Your future isn’t waiting for the perfect moment.
It’s waiting for a decision.

So:

1. Pick a time today (even 10 minutes).
2. Grab your poles.
3. Step out your door and start walking — one stride, one breath at a time.

It only takes one decision to change the course of your life — and it might just start with your very next walk with CCNW.
