Think winter is downtime for your landscape? Think again.
Each Friday in January, we’re sharing our Winter Landscape To-Do List—easy, impactful steps that make a big difference come spring.

Our first task is to prepare and protect! We have to get the landscape ready for the harsh winter conditions, so these tasks focus on prevention, which will save money and time in the long term. Do not forget to cover and wrap your in-ground plants when temperatures drop low! We recommend a breathable fabric, but if plastic is all you have, just be sure to remove it before the sun comes up the next day!

Mistletoe may be famous for holiday kisses, but this plant has a surprising scientific story!

Mistletoe is actually a hemiparasitic plant, meaning it can perform photosynthesis but also relies on host trees—like oaks, maples, or apple trees—for water and nutrients. Its seeds are spread by birds, which deposit the sticky seeds onto branches where they attach and grow.
So next time you see a sprig hanging during the holidays, remember—there’s a whole world of biology and folklore behind that festive greenery!
