If you know anything about us at all, you know we fall hard for dogs with medical needs. Our co-founders both have medical backgrounds and between them at least 40 years of rescue experience. So taking a hard dog that others might hesitate to take on is natural for us.
A few months back we were in a position of being the last resort for 2 ten month old Chinese Crested pups that were in really bad shape. Along with them came three one week old babies whose mom had died and they needed to be bottle fed. Between the two of us, we definitely had the ability to take this big project on, so now we’re coming to you to help us fund it.
The two older pups have two very different issues going on. Otter is hairless, which brings on special care needs in and of itself. On top of that he has Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS) commonly known as canine dry eye. His eyes were a matted infected mess. For the first month or so he required 4 different eye meds, one as many as six times a day. Results of his Schirmer Tear Test showed that he was producing zero tears. This means (and believe us when we say he is so worth it!) he will require eye drops for the rest of his life to help stimulate tear production. As he has grew, we noticed changes in his eyelids. It was determined that he also suffered with entropion which is a condition where the eyelids turn inward and the eyelashes scraped the corneas every time he blinked. This required surgery to fix but he came through it like the little champ that he is.
His sister, Abalone, is in good physical health but mentally not so much. She is a powderpuff version of the Cresteds as in she does have hair. She is very timid and nervous. She is dependent on her brother to help her navigate the world and it does seem for the first time in all these years we have what we consider to be a bonded pair. They will need to be adopted together. Despite working diligently with her for months under the direction of a trainer, we saw little to no improvement. We have started her on a medication that should help with her Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
All this to say we humbly ask for your assistance financially with these precious souls. Just look at their pics! They are happy now and love their lives. We are seeing improvement every day in Abalone since a starting her med. Otter is doing great and has the biggest personality!
