Providing a safe home for youth in foster care & homeless young adults.

The Trent Hill Center for Children & Families is a home for youth who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, and abandonment, or are experiencing homelessness. The Center provides a safe and supportive space where children’s developmental, physical, emotional, social, educational, intellectual, and spiritual needs can be met. In addition to the residential care we provide, the Center also functions as a community-based mental health counseling center. We provide individual, group, and family counseling services to children and families and offer the option of participating either in-person or via telehealth. Using a trauma-informed model of care, the Center works in partnership with families on-site to develop a family-centered plan for reunification; teach parenting, communication, and life management skills; counsel children and family members; and offer case management, advocacy, and information and referral services to ensure that the families’ social, psychological, intellectual, financial, and other needs are met in preparation for reunification. The Trent Hill Center for Children and Families is a private, non-profit, 501(c)3 child and family services organization that is nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation.

We’re having all the fall fun at Trent Hill Center! 🎃

This past weekend youth in our Group Home and Day Services enjoyed a fun-filled trip to McLeod Farms, where they explored the corn maze, wandered through the pumpkin patch, and were able to pick out their very own pumpkins to take back and decorate!

For one of our youth, it was their very first visit to a pumpkin patch, and they were amazed to discover just how many different varieties of pumpkins there are!

A special thank you to McLeod Farms for generously making this experience possible! Our youth were able to try new things, make memories together, and simply be kids. ❤️

Sometimes, the hardest feelings are the ones we can’t put into words.

For youth in foster care, grief can be especially complicated. Grief over the loss of family connections, familiar places, relationships, or the childhood they imagined. Sometimes, those feelings are simply too big to explain.

During a recent counseling session, one of our youth used art as a way to explore and express difficult emotions. Therapeutic art gives young people an opportunity to:

🖍️ Express what words can’t by communicating feelings that may be too overwhelming or difficult to verbalize.

💙 Find moments of calm by using the creative process to slow down, feel grounded, and regulate emotions.

🎨 Make sense of complicated feelings by giving shape and color to emotions like grief, anger, sadness, and confusion.

Healing doesn’t always happen through conversation. Sometimes, it happens quietly, one pencil stroke at a time. ❤️

This fall break, our youth headed to Florida for a few days of history, adventure, and unforgettable firsts in St. Augustine!

For most of our youth, this was their first trip to Florida. For one, it was something even more special: her very first time seeing the beach.

The days were packed with new experiences! Youth stepped back in time at the Fountain of Youth and Castillo de San Marcos, explored historic St. George Street, and learned about the city’s spooky side on a nighttime ghost tour.

They climbed to new heights at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, got up close with wildlife at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park, explored the natural beauty of Anastasia State Park, and even toured Flagler College to get a glimpse of college life!

Of course, there was plenty of delicious food, treats, laughter, shopping, and time spent making memories together along the way.

At Trent Hill Center, we believe experiences like these are about so much more than a vacation. They’re opportunities for our youth to discover new places, learn outside the classroom, build relationships, and imagine possibilities beyond what they’ve known.

From seeing the ocean for the very first time to exploring centuries of history, these are the moments that make a lasting impact. Thank you to the Lucas Family Foundation for making this experience possible. ❤️

This week a 16-year-old in our care asked for a hoodie now that the mornings are cooler. Thanks to items purchased from our wishlist this past summer, a new hoodie was waiting for him when he got home from school.

His response stopped us in our tracks:

“I’ve never been anywhere where I asked for something and actually got it.”

A hoodie may seem like a small thing. But for a teen who has experienced trauma and instability, having someone hear a need, and meet it, means so much more.

Now as cooler weather arrives, our shelves need restocking. We’re asking our community to help us prepare with hoodies, sweatpants, long-sleeve shirts, and other everyday essentials.

A familiar face from our Independent Living Program, Triston joined a panel as a “Life Coach” this past Saturday where he answered questions, shared advice, and offered encouragement to other youth and young adults with lived experience.

For Triston, this opportunity was especially meaningful. After spending time in foster care himself, and completing ILP, he is now living independently, working full time, and building a career serving other youth in foster care.

We are incredibly proud and can’t wait to see where his journey takes him next. Way to go, Triston! ❤️

Last week, four members of YEA! P*e Dee (one not pictured) used their voices to advocate for youth and young adults with lived experience by testifying before the Joint Citizens and Legislative Committee on Children (JCLCC).

Their testimony focused on two issues that can have a lasting impact on young people in and transitioning from foster care: education and housing.

They shared their own experiences and perspectives while advocating for changes that can create greater stability and opportunity for young people across South Carolina.

A member of the Trent Hill Center team also testified, providing additional insight into the barriers young people face and the importance of policies and resources that support them as they work toward independence.

We are incredibly proud of these four young people for having the courage to speak up, not only for themselves, but for others whose voices may not always make it into the rooms where decisions are made. ❤️

Sunday Sundaes!🍦

Today was a little sweeter thanks to some of our wonderful mentors who hosted a sundae bar for the youth in our Group Home!

From picking out their favorite toppings to spending time together, it was an afternoon filled with treats and smiles.

We’re so grateful for mentors who continue to show up for our youth and find fun ways to make everyday moments feel special. ❤️

These talented volunteers recently answered our call and put their skills to work building new shelving to help us maximize our storage space and stay organized so we can better serve the youth and young adults in our programs.
