🎓 ICYMI: MEET PROMISE SCHOLAR JAHSHAUN GRANT.

If you joined us at the Power of Promise Luncheon, you met Jahshaun Grant, a Hartford Promise Scholar from the Class of 2024 whose story captures exactly what it means to reimagine the American Dream.
Born and raised in Hartford, Jahshaun is the first person in his family to attend college.

Today, he’s studying at the University of Connecticut — loan-free and debt-free — and making the most of every opportunity in front of him.

He’s involved with the National Association of Black Accountants and the Association of Latino Professionals for America. He also founded and serves as president of the FirstGen Business Society, creating community for students navigating college as the first in their families to do it.

Jahshaun says his Hartford upbringing taught him not only to want more for himself, but to give back to the community that raised him.

And he’s carrying one idea with him:
“Life is 10% of what you’re given and 90% of what you make of it.”

Watch Jahshaun’s story and see what happens when talent meets opportunity, support, and the determination to create your own path.

“My name is Jahshaun Grant, and I am the American Dream.” 💚

💚 A teacher’s legacy. Two future educators. Generations of possibility.

For more than 30 years, Katherine “Kathy” Spada Basto helped Hartford students believe in themselves as a special education teacher.

Today, that commitment continues through the Katherine Spada Basto Scholarship, established by her husband, Ron, who donated her entire(!) teacher’s pension to Hartford Promise to support two Scholars every year, forever.

Meet this year’s recipients:
🎓 Zarileyxis Gomez, a junior at the University of Hartford majoring in Special Education.
🎓 Tristian Bryant, a junior at the UConn majoring in Education.

Both Scholars are pursuing a future in education, carrying forward the spirit of a woman who believed every child could succeed.

Thank you to Ron and Katherine's family for investing in our Scholars and the students they will one day inspire. 🙏
