As a caregiver of a child with autism, one thing I wish more people understood is this:

Non-communicative does NOT mean not smart.
It does not mean not aware. ๐Ÿฉต
It does not mean not feeling. ๐Ÿ’™

Communication can look different for every individual. Over time, Iโ€™ve learned to adapt communication to meet my childโ€™s needs and abilities and Iโ€™ve learned that there is so much more being understood than people may realize.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸผPatience matters.
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸผKindness matters.
๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸผUnderstanding matters. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Sometimes the loudest voices are not spoken out loud. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’ฌ Whatโ€™s something you wish others understood about autism, Alzheimerโ€™s, caregiving, or cognitive conditions?

Let us know below!

We have a future Project Lifesaver responder in training ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ“ก

We posted a few weeks ago about big sis wanting to learn how the Project Lifesaver receiver works. Catch some live action moments from her practice with the receiver.

Honestly, moments like this remind us exactly why this mission matters. ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ’™

Project Lifesaver is more than equipment. Itโ€™s about helping protect vulnerable individuals, supporting families, and creating safer communities. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Watching younger generations become curious about helping others and understanding the importance of safety is something truly special. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ“ก Every signal matters.
๐Ÿ’™ Every life matters.

Weโ€™ve received a lot of questions about who or what qualifies someone for the Project Lifesaver program, and we wanted to help clear up some common misunderstandings. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Project Lifesaver is not designed for one specific diagnosis.

This program is intended for individuals who are at risk of wandering, eloping, or becoming lost due to cognitive, developmental, neurological, or safety-related concerns.

That means qualification is based more on behavior and safety risk rather than a diagnosis label. ๐Ÿ’™

For example, the program may benefit individuals who:
๐Ÿงฉ Have autism
๐Ÿง  Have Alzheimerโ€™s or dementia
๐Ÿ’™ Have developmental or cognitive disabilities
๐Ÿšถ Have a history of wandering/eloping
โš ๏ธ May not fully understand danger, surroundings, or personal safety

Itโ€™s important to understand that wandering/eloping is not the same as intentionally โ€œrunning awayโ€ or being defiant.

Many individuals who wander do so because they may become disoriented, overwhelmed, drawn to something of interest, or unaware of the dangers around them.

So if your loved one does not have a formal diagnosis, thatโ€™s okay. Our focus is on safety risk and wandering behaviors, not a specific diagnosis. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’ฌ Have questions about whether Project Lifesaver may be a good fit for your loved one? Reach out! Weโ€™re happy to help.

Did you know individuals with autism are estimated to be 160x more likely to drown than their neurotypical peers?

Drowning is also considered the leading cause of death among individuals with autism.

This is why water safety conversations are so incredibly important. ๐Ÿ’™

For many individuals with autism, water can be deeply appealing because it provides a powerful sensory experience:

๐ŸŒŠ The feeling of pressure from the water
โœจ The visual reflections and movement
๐Ÿ’ฆ The sounds and sensations of splashing

Water can also become a calming escape during times of stress, anxiety, or sensory overwhelm. For some individuals, it helps regulate emotions and provides comfort.

While this connection to water can be beautiful, it also means families and caregivers often need to take extra precautions around pools, lakes, rivers, creeks, and even bathtubs.

๐Ÿ’™ Water safety tips:
โœ”๏ธ Consider swim lessons when appropriate
โœ”๏ธ Use locks, alarms, or barriers around water
โœ”๏ธ Keep close supervision near any body of water
โœ”๏ธ Teach emergency safety skills early
โœ”๏ธ Have a wandering prevention plan in place

At Ohio County Safety Lifeline, safety education and prevention are at the heart of our mission.

Thatโ€™s rightโ€ฆ Ohio County is now officially listed as a Project Lifesaver Agency! ๐Ÿ“ก๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐ŸŽ‰

This is such a HUGE milestone for our community and for everyone who has supported this mission from the very beginning. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’™

Soโ€ฆ whatโ€™s next? ๐Ÿ‘€

Thereโ€™s just ONE final step before we begin officially registering participants:
โœ… Insurance coverage

We want to ensure our participants, volunteers, responders, and board members are fully protected before launchโ€ฆ and thankfully, we are VERY close! ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿšจ That means an OFFICIAL PROGRAM LAUNCH is expected within the next few weeks! ๐Ÿšจ

The countless hours of training, planning, meetings, paperwork, fundraising, and preparation are finally coming together and we could not be more excited to help make Ohio County even safer. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ“ก

Sometimes, running a nonprofit looks like this.

An iPad, a laptop, handwritten notes, and a โ€œmobile officeโ€ set up in the car rider line. ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ“‹

Sometimes itโ€™s answering emails on a lunch break from a full-time job.

Sometimes itโ€™s late nights researching grants, insurance, policies, and resources after the kids are asleep.

Sometimes itโ€™s squeezing meetings, phone calls, spreadsheets, and planning into the little bits of free time we can find as caregivers, parents, and community members.

Behind every event, training, post, document, and program are countless hours that most people never see.

But when we say we pour our hearts into Ohio County Safety Lifeline, we truly mean it. ๐Ÿ’™

Because this mission matters.
Because families matter.
Because creating a safer community is worth every bit of effort. ๐Ÿงฉ๐Ÿ“ก

Thank you to everyone who continues to support, encourage, share, donate, and believe in what weโ€™re building together. Weโ€™re just getting started. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’™ Every life connected.
๐Ÿ’œ Every family protected.
