For the past 30 days, a local family has been displaced from their home. After weeks of advocacy, they have finally been placed in a motel—but the hardship isn’t over.

With no adequate way to cook or prepare meals and many personal belongings lost during their displacement, this family needs our support.

The family lives in an apartment in Newington, Connecticut, where the HVAC system has failed and caused significant water leakage through the walls and flooring. The apartment is currently wet, has a strong sewage-like odor, visible signs of mold, and a significant gnat problem. These conditions have made the home extremely difficult for the family to safely occupy.

The mother has limited family support, works part-time, and does not currently have the financial resources to secure a hotel while this situation is being addressed.

WILA is stepping in to advocate for this family. We are working to contact the property owner regarding the conditions in the apartment while also trying to secure funding to provide the mother and her son with at least a few nights of safe, temporary hotel accommodations, however we don’t know how long it will take to not only repair the HVAC system but to also remove the mold and proper sanitation.

This need is especially urgent because her son requires disability-related personal care each evening, including catheterization and a bathroom routine that must be performed in a clean, safe, and sanitary environment.

We are asking our community to help us provide this family with a safe place to stay while we work toward a longer-term resolution.
