Check out the newly formed CT Food Sovereignty Collective's 2026 legislative agenda! This holistic platform for food, health, economic, and environmental justice unites food access with interconnecting issues such as housing, health care, and environmental rights.

Connecticut Food System Alliance has helped found this new initiative to support organizing throughout the state to grow regenerative, interdependent, democratic food systems centering Black, Brown, and Indigenous foodways and food work. This policy agenda shows a path to economic, health, and environmental justice through many interconnected issues. There are two policy priorities:
- Establishing a permanent Connecticut Food Fund to invest in universal school meals, SNAP enhancements, and other food security measures
- Releasing $10 million in bonded funds that were already allocated in 2022 to support food pantries and food distribution

The other sections of the policy agenda including supportive agricultural and environmental policies, plus interconnected policies for health care, housing, and justice reform.

At the launch of the Connecticut Food Sovereignty Collective on Saturday, April 12 at in Bridgeport, we gathered to share knowledge, dreams of a just and equitable food system, and delicious food from and coffee from !

We learned about indigenous food history from - who also shared some great reading recommendations and efforts for food sovereignty and early learning center gardens in Bridgeport from youth food advocate Zane. offered an introductory Know Your Rights workshop so community food advocates know how to support and protect immigrants in our spaces and neighborhoods.

With this grounding, we all talked about what food sovereignty means to us - and how we want to see it embodied and thriving in Connecticut. Thank you to everyone who participated for sharing your energy, hope, and efforts with us on this rainy Saturday! As a gesture of reciprocity, we hope you will consider making a gift to the Tribe to support Clan Mother Shoran Waupatukuay Piper and Drummers and Dancers to participate in two days of ceremony as thanks for learning and working together on their land.

Connecticut Food System Alliance has been working with this group since fall 2023 to support the launch of this new collective which aims to build power for regenerative, democratic, interdependent food systems that celebrate black, brown, and indigenous food sovereignty. The Connecticut Food Sovereignty Collective will connect community food advocacy and statewide movements for justice in areas connected to food because food security does not exist without housing justice, education justice, health justice, migrant justice, or racial and economic justice. We invite you to join this new effort - stay tuned for the next steps, meeting invite, and save the date for our next gathering September 20!
