Hi friends! As you might be aware, June is Aphasia Awareness Month 🧠 !
At CSHA, we know communication is a human right, but not all environments are designed to support communication access. This creates frustrating, often avoidable barriers that can have a huge impact on functional independence and social participation. That’s why we want to spread awareness about what it means to be intentional about creating ‘aphasia-friendly’ environments.
When an environment or communication materials are ‘aphasia-friendly’, it means that they help people with aphasia participate more fully in conversations, healthcare decisions, community activities, and everyday life. Simple changes such as using concise or simplified written information, lots of visual supports, allowing for additional response and processing time, and reducing distractions can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those impacted by this language disorder.
It’s also important to remember that aphasia affects each person differently. There is no single “right” strategy, and the most effective supports are often those that reflect an individual’s strengths, preferences, and goals.
This month - whether you’re a clinician, educator, researcher, caregiver, or a person with aphasia yourself - take a moment to learn more about aphasia and consider how you can help create more accessible, inclusive communication environments for everyone.
