Hi friends! As you might be aware, June is Aphasia Awareness Month 🧠 !
At CSHA, we know communication is a human right, but not all environments are designed to support communication access. This creates frustrating, often avoidable barriers that can have a huge impact on functional independence and social participation. That’s why we want to spread awareness about what it means to be intentional about creating ‘aphasia-friendly’ environments.
When an environment or communication materials are ‘aphasia-friendly’, it means that they help people with aphasia participate more fully in conversations, healthcare decisions, community activities, and everyday life. Simple changes such as using concise or simplified written information, lots of visual supports, allowing for additional response and processing time, and reducing distractions can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those impacted by this language disorder.
It’s also important to remember that aphasia affects each person differently. There is no single “right” strategy, and the most effective supports are often those that reflect an individual’s strengths, preferences, and goals.
This month - whether you’re a clinician, educator, researcher, caregiver, or a person with aphasia yourself - take a moment to learn more about aphasia and consider how you can help create more accessible, inclusive communication environments for everyone.
Swipe through to learn what aphasia-friendly environments and materials can look like. Don’t know where to get started or how to support? DM us! At CSHA, we’re always happy to help with all of your CSD-based questions or concerns. 🧠 👀

Here at CSHA, it’s one of our favorite times of the year. Not only are many students graduating from their CSD training programs, but it is also a time to celebrate CSD professionals in general because... May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month 🎉 🧠
Often times, folks don’t realize how broad and dynamic the field of CSD is, and this includes the work of speech-language pathologists (SLPs). From speech sounds and language development to swallowing safety, cognition, hearing, social communication, and AAC, SLPs work across the lifespan to help people connect in the ways that matter most. Not only this, but the field of SLP is constantly evolving and incorporating new research evidence and technology to support clients and patients alike.
So, let’s break down the “Big 9” areas of SLP clinical practice and highlight just how broad—and fundamentally human—this field really is.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month 💚

Each year, millions of Americans experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and many continue to live with long-term effects that impact daily life. Brain injuries are often invisible, but they can affect thinking, communication, memory, emotions, and more.

Speech-language pathologists and audiologists play a critical role in supporting individuals with brain injuries. They help people regain communication skills, strengthen cognitive abilities like memory and problem solving, and improve participation in everyday life.

This month, we recognize the individuals living with brain injury, their families, and the clinicians who support their recovery. Raising awareness helps reduce stigma, improve access to care, and promote prevention.

Together, we can increase understanding and support for brain injury survivors. 💚
