As many may have heard, this week the Hartford Common Council voted to remove the construction of the new fire station from the capital improvement program.
First, I want to assure you that this does not mean we will be abandoning the Safe Haven Baby Box project. My husband and I have been working very hard to stay in touch with our community leaders regarding the progress and planning for the box. We are still in a waiting period to see if there are any other avenues the city plans to take in order to continue with the construction of the new station. I am currently exploring other options for the Baby Box, but my ultimate goal is to keep the box in Hartford where it was originally intended to go.
Second, I wanted to update you financially. We have successfully raised $26,442 for the Hartford box. This means we have raised enough for the entire project. The funds are safely with the Safe Haven Baby Box organization, the non-profit organization that builds, installs, and maintains the boxes throughout the country. I was hoping to post about this in an exciting, celebratory way, however the city counsel halting the project put a bit of a damper on our great news. Rest assured, we are working hard to come up with a plan to continue on. I wanted to make sure the community, especially those who donated their hard earned money towards this project, knew that those funds are safe and we are continuing to work diligently!
Third, and in effort to end this update positively, on March 15, 2026, WI updated their Safe Haven law (2025 Wisconsin Act 94). Previously, an infant could be surrendered within 72 hours of birth. Now, the law officially allows for the surrender of an infant up to thirty days after birth. This is a huge win for Wisconsin, especially for parents in crisis, providing a safe alternative to infant abandonment in unsafe conditions. Many people, including some within our community, worked hard to get this legislation passed.
