A Safe Haven for Hartford The goal: A Safe Haven Baby Box in our new fire department for parents in crisis

04/18/2026

As many may have heard, this week the Hartford Common Council voted to remove the construction of the new fire station from the capital improvement program.

First, I want to assure you that this does not mean we will be abandoning the Safe Haven Baby Box project. My husband and I have been working very hard to stay in touch with our community leaders regarding the progress and planning for the box. We are still in a waiting period to see if there are any other avenues the city plans to take in order to continue with the construction of the new station. I am currently exploring other options for the Baby Box, but my ultimate goal is to keep the box in Hartford where it was originally intended to go.

Second, I wanted to update you financially. We have successfully raised $26,442 for the Hartford box. This means we have raised enough for the entire project. The funds are safely with the Safe Haven Baby Box organization, the non-profit organization that builds, installs, and maintains the boxes throughout the country. I was hoping to post about this in an exciting, celebratory way, however the city counsel halting the project put a bit of a damper on our great news. Rest assured, we are working hard to come up with a plan to continue on. I wanted to make sure the community, especially those who donated their hard earned money towards this project, knew that those funds are safe and we are continuing to work diligently!

Third, and in effort to end this update positively, on March 15, 2026, WI updated their Safe Haven law (2025 Wisconsin Act 94). Previously, an infant could be surrendered within 72 hours of birth. Now, the law officially allows for the surrender of an infant up to thirty days after birth. This is a huge win for Wisconsin, especially for parents in crisis, providing a safe alternative to infant abandonment in unsafe conditions. Many people, including some within our community, worked hard to get this legislation passed.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me via direct message. Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement!

Scott and Shannen from FM106.1 mentioned the story about the little girl surrendered at the Racine Safe Haven box today on their Good Stuff segment! The best part? The family that little peanut was placed with will be adopting her! God bless the parents that made the difficult decision to surrender and the parents that are opening their home to love this little girl as their own!

The very first WI baby saved 💕 Hoping to have good news soon regarding the Hartford box!!!

I am asked all the time, “but do we really need this?” or “have we had an issue with something like this before”?

This is just a few minutes away. God bless the parents that felt they had no other option. Hopefully there will be in 2026 💕

Hi everyone 🙂 I’m still working on arranging pick ups/drop offs for the items from the silent auction. Thank you all so much for being patient!

I would like to also ask for patience as I try to respond to all direct messages, e-mails and texts, as there are quite a few! I’m taking this as a good sign and hoping it means word is getting out about this project!

I would like to also mention that I am not employed by Safe Haven Baby Boxes which is the organization that installs these devices in communities. I took on this project to raise the funds needed to have this as an option for parents in crisis in Hartford and the surrounding communities. Essentially I would consider myself a volunteer whose mission is to raise the funds necessary. I am working with them closely to ensure that everything is done correctly!

Thank you for your time, for spreading the word and for supporting this effort!

I have the official list of winners! 😊👏🏼

Please be patient with me as I reach out to everyone, and please watch your emails, as I do not get phone numbers to text or call. If you see this, won an item and would prefer to text or call to arrange delivery or pick up, please pm me your phone number!

Thank you again!

Thank you to everyone who bid on items, and of course again, thank you to all of our generous sponsors who helped make this even such a great success! Cards that were used for bidding will be charged in the morning!

Assuming everything goes as planned and there are no issues with payment, I have a grand total for the event that we held at Bilda's Friess Lake Pub!!! I am BLOWN AWAY. This total does not include any direct donations that were made using the QR code on Saturday. I will be able to see those later on, but those are not included in this total.

I am HONORED to announce that this event brought in $4,914! If I include the money that Nail Essentials raised during their Maxwell Street Days event, and direct donations made via the online link, the GRAND TOTAL we have raised thus far is $7,379!!! With a ultimate goal of $22,500, we are just over 30% there!

I cant believe it. I am so touched by everyone's generosity, love, stories and help with this project. I will never be able to say it enough. Im so proud to be a part of this community!

A special thank you to my husband Chris Becker, my sister in law Lindsay Kinley, my brother in law Tyler Kinley, and Delaney Beauchamp for all of your help at the event Saturday!

The end of tonight’s auction is “popcorn bidding”. Don’t worry, I didn’t know what that was either. This means that if something is bid on, there will automatically be 10 minutes added to the end of the auction on that item! This allows everyone to have a fair shot at winning the item!
